I am taking an A and P class, and the teacher said babies can't shiver for heat regulation. I asked when we gain that ability. The teacher said she didn?t know so now I am curious. How old do you have to be to shiver? I struck out with google can anyone point me to site with this info? Thanks.

Anatomy and physiology. I am just curious at what age that happens and children start shivering to keep warm.

it takes a while for muscle control to develop. If you pay attention to infants, they use their legs and feet for just about anything, as that's the first muscle control to come in line.

Honestly, I don't know an exact developmental time for it, but it requires advanced muscle coordination, and as said earlier, the hypothalamus.

As soon as you have the ability to picture your grandfather mounting grandma like a hunting trophy.

Edit: Damn, Jeff beat me to it.

I can turn shivering off at will. But then I can turn off hiccups too. Turning hiccups off only works about 80% of the time though.

what is your method for hiccups? I hold from taking my next breath (don't have any air in) and concentrate on being calm and it's gone... like you say, 80% of the time.
