When do the new ATI and Nvidia chips hit?

If they come out before Dec 20, then all is good. I plan on upgrading my little bros computer, and giving my 9600 Pro would complete the picture. But naturally, I would need a new videocard if I give mine away, yes? 😉
 
It seems the ATI 9900 may come out around Chirstmas. With DDR2 memory clocked around 800 Mhz with a core @ 420 Mhz (9700 pro is 325 Mhz).

I do hope they keep selling 128 MB cards though, 256 Mbs are just to damn expensive. I never plan to play a game @ 1200 x 1600 (+) anyway.

I also have money put away just incase this new R420 comes out.... If its under 400 dollars and offers 50% more performance and IQ, I'm there.
 
Actually, you may have some issues just "upgrading" to ATI's next real chip. Unless there is a R360 (rumors only so far), then the R400 (or R420?) will be the next chip which is going to be PCI-X (or PCI-Express for the full name) NOT AGP, which means you will need a new motherboard to install it... And I don't think the Two Times Faster claim will be that far off. The card will have about 4x the bus bandwidth as current cards have available to them for use (sort of like the difference between an ISA video card and a PCI video card). Now grant it, there will have to be some other improvements other then the bus, but that is a big step. Add in DDR II (or possibly DDR3) and you are looking at a serieous increase in the memory clock on them, which is a bottleneck on upcomming releases. I think their claim may be valid at this point (grant that they don't have full prototype, but the theory seems about true).
 
I can believe the R420 will be twice as fast as the R300, but probably not the R350. ATi's modus operandi has usually been to double performance every 18 months, and they're on track to do so. Obviously I don't expect it to double performance in every situation, but I an see it doing so in some instances.

I expect both ATI and nVidia to slightly bump their product line this fall/winter, but I don't expect next-gen high-end cards (NV40, R420) until spring.

Arn't they making a PCI/AGP bridge so it will work for both? Doesn't matter really. nforce 3 will be a big seller. I'm still here with my kt333 waiting for that thing to come out.

The rumours are that it will work on both.

It would be stupid to make it PCI-Express only, as not many boards will have the required slot.
And PCI-X isn't PCI-Express. See here

Also, AGP 8x has more bandwidth than AGP 4x (twice as much I believe) , yet offers pretty much no improvement in performance, thus PCI-Express having 4x the bandwidth won't necessarily help much (like SATA offering 150MBPs)

I've also heard Doom 3 only uses 80 Megs of the on-board ram at the most on a video card :/ .
 
Just buy a Nvidia 5900 Non Pro around the time you wish to upgrade they are getting cheaper every day and they run at 5900 ultra level's by just overclock the Core from 400 to 450 and you have an ultra !! haha FREE

i'm guessing the cards that come out wont be worth the money when the 5900 with its high clocks and fast ram plus by that time it will have optimised and stable drivers will be the best value card for the new games that come out.

Frankly i think the ATI 9800 Pro with its 378 core / 674 mem may be more then enough for the games that are out now but just wait for these new games

450 Core and 850 mem will make a lot more difference then. plus the games will mandatroaly want 8-1 rendering styles.
that will help allot too.

Or if my guess is wrong and the ATI 9800 Pro is still faster at that time then your choice is simple. for the price of a new videocard at the time they came out you probably could get yourself a ATI9800 Pro or 5900 and a Athlon64 and new board ....
 
Um, what was that about "mandatroaly want 8-1 rendering styles?" You realize it is the 9800 that is 8x1, and the 5900 that is 4x2/8x0. Not to mention the 9800 appears to be much faster in the floating point shading that the industry is moving to. Most current signs point to the 9800 being more future-proof, but obviously the most recent Doom III benches point to the 5900 as being the superior Doom III card. We'll see how accurate those pointers are in a few months. I'm actually curious about Aquamark 3, too, in terms of future shading competence.

nvidia claims the same thing, NV40 being twice as fast as NV30
plz dun say anything about the NV30 being slow already so the NV40 being twice as fast is more realistic than ATi's case...i dun feel up to explaining today 🙁
