When do FPS matter?

Having had a computer that plays CS 1.6 around 30fps and looks fine, I was wondering:

How different do high FPS really look?





Can you really tell the difference between 60 FPS and 100? How many FPS do you really need for a game to be playable?



My new rig w/ a 6600GT is coming soon, so I'm wondering if I'll be able to notice the difference in older games like CS 1.6

It makes the game run smoother, but does not effect the quality.

From 60-100 frames, there is not much difference. I would say 40 frames or higher is good.

agree although 30-35 mins don't bother me.

The reason everyone wants framerates averaging 40, and preferably 60+, is for the minimum framerates. IOW, the higher the average framerate then the higher the minimum framerate (usually), which means a much smoother gameplay experience. Over 60 is not noticeable at all.

You will notice a difference with your new card, though, at least once you crank the resolution and/or details up (AA/AF). 😉

To have a better video card for multiplayer games on the internet is a must.

Remember that when you see 25 people at the same time on your screen, it may take more power to keep the 40+ fps. And what you want is the min fps to be 40 and more.

If you do not play multiplayer games, you may notice the difference but you should try higher resolution and enjoy the view.

My personnal experience with Medal of Honnor (the first one) from my GeForce 256 DDR to a GeForce4 Ti4400 was a very good one. It was now possible to have good graphics and great performance. I began to love this game after my purchase.

There was a technology demo for 3dfx that showed the differance between 30 and 60 fps side by side. It was pretty noticeable.

Looks smoother more fluid gameplay. I personally put vsync on because I can't stand the screen tearing when it's off.

Not everyone can tell the difference between 60 and 100 fps. People are different, so some will be able to notice while others won't. I'd tend to think that those that rarely game would not notice the difference.

The faster a game you play the more FPS you'll need. If you make a 180 degree turn in 0.1 sec then with 30 FPS you will get the starting position, halfway through and the end, only 3 different images. So when doing fast movements you'll get more precision and they will seem smoother.
How much is needed is a personal taste. For online gaming I like the minimum to be over 40, but in singleplayer it doesn't matter that much if the framerate drops now and then.

Your wrong. ALL movies run at 27FPS, not 25. And movies also incorporate motion blur, which makes all the difference.

Any game is playable at 30fps, but more is better. Ever played halo on xbox? That was running at 30fps and not once did it go to 31. They locked it at 30 and they kept it at that almost 100% of the time.

The more the better.

Your an idoit. Movies and TV is ENTIRELY different than computer games. You CAN know the difference between 27FPS and 60FPS. A BIG difference. Please leave these forums because you are just posting useless information.

C'mon guys. Modern Film runs at 24fps, NTSC broadcasts 30fps (29.970) and PAL broadcasts are at 25 fps. None of which has a damn thing to do with a game engine framerate, or what's a playable framerate in a video game.

Exactly, and there was an App that shows you the difference between any two FPS speeds you choose, I have it on my HD, but I can't attach files on these forums, I searched for it on the web and I couldn't find it, it's called "FPS Compare", the original file is called "fpscmp02.zip", anyway, using this software I was able to differentiate between 80 and 120 FPS, hope someone finds it.

People are different, some people can't see the difference over 25FPS, and that doesn't mean they should leave these forums :disgust: But you're right about the Movie and TV thing, they're completely different than Games.

30 fps is minimum for quick games.... I don't mind a rare drop to 15fps in slow games (NWN, KoTOR).

There's been a thread here regarding this topic maybe 4 months ago, which is where I found this FPS compare application, I'll search for it in the forums archives. To give you an idea of how this app works, it shows you a rotating object with a vertical line splitting the screen in the middle into two sides, you choose the FPS speed for each side and compare each half of the rotating object thus you can see the difference between different FPS speeds, anybody remembers this application, and where to download it?

i play CSS and some other first person shooters. to me, steady 40 or higher is better. it's the big drops of 20 FPS or more that start to bug you. i would say there is a difference between steady 50 and steady 100. not a big difference, but you can tell the two apart.
