Unfortunately, for some places, you pretty much have to spend that much unless you plan on staying in hostels. My wife and I went to France a few weeks ago and plane tickets alone were nearly $2400. If you want to see some countries/cities, you end up having to pay.

My condo in PCB rents for 3k/wk alone and we're one of the cheaper rentals.

But when I graduated, I started work right away. Your last few months of school are the best time to look for work. You usually have time and motivation to look for a job, without the need/ability to immediately start working. You usually have housing and you have support and money.

That's fine if you have a city or two that you're applying for jobs in. I won't have housing or anything figured out until I take that vacation. I'm not going to be living in the same region of the USA after college. I hate living in the PNW. I'm moving thousand(s) of miles away from anyone I've gotten to known up here. So... your point is kind of null and void in my world.

Just saying... It's kind of pointless to take advantage of any of my "university resources" when they have nothing for places that I'll be going. I've talked with them about it before.

EDIT: OH and to people who hate on me for buying material possessions and think I'll live to regret all of them. That's not really the case. I bought an iPhone 4 when it came out. First real smartphone that I ever got. I've been happy with that purchase ever since I got it. It's fucking amazing. I understand that kind of regret buying things idea, but that's not really going to happen to me. I'm always going to buy things I want over going on vacation. Vacations are not interesting to me. They have no point or goal. If I am going somewhere then I have an alternative reason other than to just go. It's so pointless and American to be like, "Oh, I am here. Well, drove 20+ hours to get here.... and.. yep, there's that. OK. Back in the car, kids!"
