When did Walmart start checking receipts?

not just what types of people, but what types of stuff they steal.

From my years in retails management I saw all kinds of retarded stuff. People will steal anything that isn't locked down.

I saw an old guy at my local grocery store stealing plastic shopping bags. You know...the free ones? This guy took a big pile of them and tried to act sneaky about it. If he had just asked, the minimum wage cashier would have given him a cart full.

The human race is doomed.

When I was in HS and worked at a higher end grocery store we were told to give out as few bags as possible. They even had training to show how to put more items in a bag and put weights in so we knew what the breaking point was etc...

I still dont see the point if door buzzers, when are they ever taken seriously? People walk out all the time and usually the exitimg customer hesitates, turns around. The cashier shrugs their shoulders, or says " dont worry about it", or totally ignores it , and the customer smiles and walks away.

Wtf is the point?

lol half the time the person is 15-20 ft past the door when it goes off anyway.

the few times it has gone off on me i just keep walking. i have yet to have anyone come ask me to come back.

hell my slow crippled ass is still faster then the old crippled greeters so they don't want to get into a limping race!

They usually check if your item isn't in a plastic bag such as a large box item. It makes sense for those situations.

Picked this post out of one of the above links. It pretty much parallels my view on this.

Me refusing to show my recipt is NOT PC for arrest or detention. A store employee preventing a customer from leaving without PC could be charged with Criminal Confinement (Felony) under Indiana Law. Furthermore if the Citizen used force to Defend themselves or to escape the situation the employee could be charged with Battery and the store could be liable for any damages to the Citizen.

Any way you dice it. If you attempt to make a Citizens Arrest (what loss prevention does) you still must have PC. If you don't then it is an ILLEGAL ARREST and the Citizen has a duty to resist.

I understand the problems that Loss Prevention faces, but come on now. We all know "those guys" who work loss prevention who think they are God of the World and would tackle grandma if you gave them the chance.

I dare store security to attempt to restrain me without PC. The lawsuit would probably pay for an early retirement.

When the buzzer goes off their is usually a loss prevention person or the clerk themselves doing a visual on who's walking out and usually know what you bought.

If you had items that should have been disabled they will usually let it slide.

However, on a loss prevention alarm they do have probable cause to stop and inspect. This is much different than forcing a receipt check.

sure if they come up and ask to check the bags (if i set off the alarm) i let them. but im not going to stop and wait for them to come to me or walk back in for them.

I remember exiting Walmart through the main entrance. The greeter chased after me and said "you're not allowed to go out these doors."
My response:
"The sign on the door says 'do not enter,' I'm not entering, I'm exiting. Nothing says I'm not allowed to exit. Have a nice night."

I wait in line at Sam's club because I agreed to it when I bought my membership. If they tried it at Walmart I would (if I shopped there) walk right past them. Walmart has enough money that it is worth it for me to be tackled and subdued just for the lawsuit payoff.

I wouldn't even fight back, I'd just wait, take careful notes and call my lawyer, and press charges as soon as the police arrived.

Samz's Club is owned by Walmart. I asked a SC lady why they check receipts and she said people used to fill up shopping carts and walk out without payin. makes sense

None of the walmart's here (Oahu) check... There is no way they'd be able to with the huge volume of customers coming in and out of the store.

The last time I was at a wallmart that checked receipts (New Mexico) I just walked on by...the line was WAY too long!

Walmart started checking receipts because it's cheaper to put one cashier at the front door than it is to pay several loss prevention agents to monitor the cameras and work the floor. They don't give a crap if it inconveniences the customers.

The problems arise when the poorly trained employees don't understand that customers have no legal obligation to comply with their requests to show a receipt, and they go all Walker Texas Ranger on someone who refuses.

When the Walmart cashier accepts your payment, all that store merchandise immediately becomes your personal property, and nobody has the right to stop you and demand you prove your property is really yours without probable cause.

Why would it be locked?

Can somebody please find the epic Walmart thread we had last year?
I searched and cant seem to find that most special epic one. I believe it was nominated for Thread of The Year or Ownage of the Year by the OP. I cant find the ATOT wiki to get a list of all those threads.

I know Costco does this all the time. They've done that for many years.

Walmart never does it though. Only does it if the little alarm thingy goes off.
