when did vietnam split into communist north and captialist south?

I'm confused. I can't find when it was split. it was a french colony until france gave up control following their capitulation in 1940. then it looks like by 1949, it was split.

when did it happen and why?

hmm that's what I thought but then I read this:
"1949 Bao Dai and President Vincent Auriol of France sign the Elysee Agreement. As part of the agreement the French pledge to assist in the building of a national anti-Communist army."

the vietnamese defeated the french, the japanese came and took over, the americans defeated the japanese, the americans gave vietnam back to the french

hmmm...maybe you're right it doesn't connect....I just assumed that if the vietnamese emperor wanted to stop communism in his country, that means there's a division. I guess it wasn't technically divided into two coutries at that point, but 1949 was the beginning of the vietminh

Sure the French have won, when it comes to surrendering, they have never been beaten 😛

hm, I know that Ho Chi Minh used the Vietminh to defeat the French in Diem Bien Phu.. the U.S. was sending France aid.. I know that France appointed Diem as the South Vietnamese President, elections were supposed to be held in 1956 but were cancelled by Diem, who had a corrupt government. During the 60s, the United States started sending in troops to help Diem and the South defeat the spread of Communism from the North and Ho Chi Minh, then that was where the Vietnam War started pretty much.
