When Did This Become a Thing with Jury Duty?

That's why they have you call the night before. So you can make those arrangements.

It could be worse... being an hourly worker I don't think I would get paid. Unlike salary where I essentially got a Free PTO day when called in.

If I have a client presentation for a million dollar project during any of those days - that 'aint getting cancelled lol. Thats pure insanity and basically a give-away to our competitors.

That isn't feasible. That isn't practical. And you can sincerely go fuck yourself as a government if you would expect such an asinine thought. The world doesn't work like that.

In my county in FL, you get a jury summons for a certain date to report which includes a juror pool ID number and a phone number. After 5PM on the evening before you are scheduled to report you call

Connecticut is the same with the night-before call.

The black friday thing has resulted in a recorded message stating: "Jury-duty is cancelled, your obligation has been fulfilled" every time for me so far.

Most likely I've ruined it for everyone now though! 😕

How do you feel about conscription?

Then you'll have to find someone else to do the presentation? Surely you can find someone else to read off powerpoint slides.

lol thats not how things work in life.

You want me to phone up a co-worker at 6:00 PM the night before - and tell them I need them book a flight tonight for a 6 AM flight tomorrow to make it to a 10am meeting presentation?

Oh also, learn all about the company - their industry - their current issues - their current systems - how they work/function - and magically make a relationship with them overnight.

my goal in life is to never have to take place in a jury

i've gotten picked twice but was moving to different counties both of those times

if i get picked again, i may decide to move on a whim

Your county gave rat's asses. You just didn't get any.

So about a month or so ago I got a jury duty notice in the mail. I slapped it on my work calendar, made sure it wasn't a busy day or anything, etc...

Today I reported for Jury Duty as requested at the time.... All to be "sworn in" then told were on-call for the next WEEK for Jury duty. Wtf?

So apparently for the rest of the week, I can be contacted at night to appear the next day for jury duty service. That's delightful, it's not like I had any plans all week to work with important meetings that I can't cancel....

When did this become a thing? And who the hell in the right mind thought this was at all acceptable?

Also, why the hell did 250+ people waste their time, money, and burning car fuels just to be told a speech and told to go home?
Well, it is better than to be required to sit in the court waiting area in case you were to be randomly called. When I served on jury duty, you were selected for a two week term, and had to show up at the court house every day and wait in case you were called to be interviewed for a jury. Most of the time one did not have to show up for the entire 2 weeks. I think I was dismissed after 4 days.

That *is* the way jury duty works. Its not like you are not notified well in advance so that you have time to prepare alternate steps should you be chosen. Personally, I hate the system as well, and think it is terribly burdensome, but that is the way it is. When I was called, I worked in medical research and had ongoing animal experiments. I was able to delay them for the few days before I was dismissed, but it would have been very difficult if I had been chosen for a jury and required to miss work for weeks.

Any competent organization has a back up plan in case someone in incapacitated.
What if you were sick or seriously injured in an accident------If you company is not able to cover that, they have very serious issues.

Back in the 90s,my dad got called every year and had to sit in court to see if he'll be called.
He didn't care. His company paid him his full salary. He just had to pay back the jury duty stipend.

Yeah. Forgot to make that point. I can't imagine a company sending only one person to a "multi million" sales proposal too.
