When did they change AGP slots around???

Ok, last night I was going to help a guy upgrade his computer with a new mobo, cpu, and memory. When I went to install the old video card into the new mobo I realize that the AGP slot is not the same as the one on his old board, it's switched around. I have been casually building computers for 5 years and have never come across this somehow. I notice that my ti 4600 was smartly made to fit both AGP slot types. When did they change the AGP slots??? What are these different slot types referred to as?

AGP 1x-2x slots and video cards used a higher voltage, and cards that only run at that voltage can't be used safely on newer motherboards.

Hi, There are two different notchings for AGP cards. One has the notch in the front of the card and the other at the back. The connectors can have one or the other or both. If it has both notches it will pretty much take either card and automatically switch the voltage. Check your manual first. Jim
