What is the US Navy doing patroling the Indian Ocean looking for pirates?

Navy Exchanges Fire With Suspected Pirates

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Two U.S. Navy warships exchanged gunfire with suspected pirates Saturday off the coast of Somalia, and one suspect was killed and five others were wounded, the navy said.

Twelve suspects were taken into custody after the early-morning shootout, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

No sailors were wounded in the battle, which occurred at about 5:40 a.m. local time, approximately 25 nautical miles off the Somali coast in international waters.

The battle started after the USS Cape St. George and USS Gonzalez, which were patrolling as part of a Dutch-led task force, spotted a 30-foot fishing boat towing smaller skiffs and prepared to board and inspect the vessels.

The suspected pirates were holding what appeared to be rocket-propelled grenade launchers, the navy said. When the suspects began shooting, naval gunners returned fire with mounted machine guns.

Three suspects were seriously wounded and being treated on one of the Navy ships, Brown told The Associated Press. A Dutch Navy medical team was en route.

The suspects' nationalities were unknown.

The Navy boarding teams confiscated an RPG launcher and automatic weapons, the statement said.

The Cape St. George, a guided-missile cruiser, and Gonzalez, a guided-missile destroyer, were conducting maritime security operations in the area. They are based in Norfolk, Va.

The International Maritime Organization has warned ships to stay away from the Somali coast because of pirate attacks, which surged to 35 last year from two in 2004.

On March 15, the U.N. Security Council encouraged naval forces operating off Somalia to take action against suspected piracy. Pirate attacks against aid ships have hindered U.N. efforts to provide relief to the victims of a severe drought in the area.

The pirate raids are part of the anarchy wracking Somalia, which has had no effective government since 1991, when warlords ousted a dictatorship and then turned on each other.

Edit: What if the US Navy kills Johnny Depp? Then how will you feel?

Actually, The very first war ships we ever commissioned were built just for the purpose of defending our merchant fleet from pirates 😉

Sounds like a UN operation, not a direct US Navy patrol.

lol.. i just think it's funny to hear of someone dumb enough to fire at a Navy warship from a fishing boat...

doesnt that answer your question?

Fighting pirates is a classic role for any navy. I'm glad their doing this and they should have started doing this a long time ago. As for whether or not this should be a function of our navy, I say that if the pirates are attacking US merchant ships or US bound merchant ships, it is appropriate for the Navy to attack them.

There are a number of treaties, by which a substantial portion of all the world's navies spend time protecting commercial shipping lanes from pirates. However, since these ships also operate according to the strategic doctrines of their states, the "protected" shipping lanes are usually far from the most economical. Small transports moving cheap volume merchandise will often forego the protection, in order to save a substantial amount of fuel and time... both of which are expensive. They are the ones who become prey for pirates... which operate along the coasts of SouthEast Asia, Africa, and (to a lesser extent) the eastern South America.

P.S. How stupid can you be? Firing RPGs at U.S. flag warships? That's like spitting at an Abrams. How did they think it was going to end for them?

I say more power to the Navy and the decision to go out there and kick some pirate butt..
There are some serious problems that most people are not aware of concerning pirating of civilian yachts and private ships and such. Drug runners, and illegal activities in the open seas and the criminals who kill and kidnap civilains in open waters.

Navy ships of many nationalities have long patrolled shipping lanes to safeguard merchant ships. This is nothing new. Pirates attack and board merchant ships - specially laden tankers because they are slow moving and sit low in the water. In some cases whole ships are taken but usually they are opportunist thieves who lock up the crew and steal the cash in the Captains safe and any crew valuable they can lay their hands on. Middle East and Far East are particularly vulnerable areas.

I'm fine with this. Just like when driving and I come at a stop light, I don't want to fear for someone trying to carjack me...I would expect the same travelling on a ship~ I don't see myself losing any freedom by having the lanes protected; unless of course I assault another ship 😉 But the whole point is to have free reign without worrying

My Aunt Gladys is from Brooklyn; if any pirate attacks her ship, he'd better bring all his friends. Aunt Gladys shot her 3rd husband for snoring.😉

US warships and SEAL teams have been performing VBSS (Visit, Board, Search, & Seizure) on suspicious vessels since right before the war in Afghanistan, looking for terrorists and/or illegal arms travelling to and from certain hotspots. If you're legal, you have nothing to fear; if not, well, too fvcking bad. What they were doing as part of a Dutch-led task force, I have no idea, but I for one am glad to see us working with our Euro-allies somewhere doing something.

Secondly, did you miss the part where they were fired on? I don't care where they are or what their mission is, if you fire on a US warship, then prepare to receive return fire and boarders. A cruiser AND a destroyer? How stupid can you be?

You do realize that the peacetime duty for any Navy is to keep the seaways safe for merchant ships?

OP got pwned.

I'm glad to see I was owned or pwned. Very interesting.

And yes, I'm sure the "pirates" fired 1st. LOL. I'm sure the US warship was just cruising along and the pirates attacked. LOL. Do you people also believe 'Saddam had WMD's', or perhaps 'Mission Accomplished', or every police report you read.

I actually think spending $3,000,000-$4,000,000 PER DAY, for the US fleet to patrol for pirates 10,000 miles away is a great idea. Really great.

Be careful out there... it's a dangerous world... filled with pirates & evildoers.
