As evident from other responses, I don't think they're nearly as popular as you think they are. Maybe up in the NW, but I still don't think most people have heard of them, save the actual genre music fans.

Are you sad that they're not your little secret anymore?

Every song that had to do with that F&#*&$n Garden State movie (it was used for the trailer) has turned into a motherf$%#n fad!!! :|

There are other emo movies out there! i dont need to hear you blast The Shins' "New Slang" for the millionth time in a row, while you dress all in black or depressing clothes and are upset that the Starbucks lady charged you $3.10 for your usual $2.75 latte you self-absorbed bastard! Why dont you go with your acoustic guitar, sit under a bridge and, in your whiny voice that a person would have to be drunk to appreciate, sing about how life is hard because your parents give you EVERY GOD DAMN THING YOU COULD WANT?!?!?!

But yeah, that song isn't that bad. I enjoy listening to it (and a few others from the GS soundtrack. Just not 24/7 like some people).

When I say "underground" I'm referring to something that has spread primarily through word-of-mouth rather than getting air time on radio/tv/whatever. And by that definition it very much was. Hell, even Death Cab couldn't be considered "well-known" when Give Up was released. I even knew several Death Cab fans that didn't even know ThePS existed.

And yes, EGGO, seems like it's everywhere now.

Who cares. I hate when people complain about a band becoming famous. Suddenly its not "underground" enough for them. Go live a mine if you love underground so much. :p

Hardly, I was more or less curious if it had spread out of the NW. I'm not sure if you're trying to jab at me or not (be my guest, pompous Lifers on ATOT are hardly my biggest concern atm), but they were hardly ever my "little secret." It's not like I fvcking discovered them. Mostly it was a culmination of a) people in class bring them up b) hearing them on the radio frequently and c) hearing the COVER in that M&Ms commercial over and over, leading to my initial question.

the second they came out? any side project is going to be a fad, especially if it comes at a time when that kind of music is THE fad.

WTF did that come from? I hope that wasn't aimed at me, because you're way off there pal. :p Come to think of it, this thread is starting to make me think of the Goth kids in South Park. "Conformist..."

check out DNTEL too, the musical portion behind the Postal Service. Great study music.

Oh, and for bands that go mainstream - I stopped caring. Really, if you enjoy a band and millions of other people do, so what? At least it was for the music instead of the hype; and sometimes the hype is justified.

This reminds me of the time some MuchMusic (Canadian MTV) Video-whatevers referred to Jimmy Eat World's "Self-Titled" album a great debut effort.
