The Oakland Raiders canceled the final week of their offseason training program in Alameda, Calif., after complaints from the NFL players' union about the intensity of the practices.

In a statement Friday, new coach Lane Kiffin said the players' union believes the Raiders' offseason program violated league rules on practice standards.

Practice standards? They won 2 games last year, they should be practicing more intensely than everyone else. They need it desperately. Practices should be as intense as possible, and as long as no one is dying it should be fair game.

Practice? We talkin about practice!

Ever since Korey Stringer died.
Instead of calling NFL players pansies, why don't you get out there with 30 lbs. of equipment and practice in the heat?
Show them how it's done!

I'd like to know what made it "too intense" before passing judgment on either side. Not enough water breaks and too many sprints are very different things.

"The Raiders won't hold this week's scheduled offseason activities, which were expected to be mostly weightlifting sessions."

I can see if this was outdoor stuff they were being forced to cut (I'm assuming it gets damn hot in california, never been there before though), but weightlifting??? Thats usually done indoors in Air Conditioned facilities, I dont really see how that could be "too intense".

Union likey looked into the extent of the physical content during the practices, either because of some off-hand comment by the coaching staff or a complaint filed by a player

It happened to the Lions last year as well..i think they released/traded most of the players that lodged the official complaint.

That is exactly what happened. Player's union received a complaint and they in turn filed a complain with the Raiders and the league.

Think about it as any work environment... Most of the off season is keeping them in shape, resting up, doing drills, and trying to heal long-term recurring injuries.

I don't see anything wrong with taking it easy. I don't think the NFL players are pansies. When it comes to playing football, they play for the right reason.....money. It's these people who follow NCAA and think playing for the honor of the school really makes a difference to the players. 90%+ of the NFL guys are dead serious about winning.

Taking it easy is not whats wrong. Being force to take it easy is whats wrong.

This is one of the "voluntary" off-season practices, so there are a lot of things that are off limits. Once training camp starts the clubs can make practices about as intense as they want.

Old news.

Although the NFL has become pansies. I am all about player safety but the fines on players hard hits these days are ridiculous. The same sport that champions violence also condemns it for a better image these days.

Bill Romanowski's perfectly legal and amazing hit on Kerry Collins (broke his jaw) is a perfect example.
