I work for a computer retail store and I got a new hp desktop in with an athlon 64 3300. Anyone know anything about this chip, is it a 754 or 939. It claims to have only 256k L2.
that would be a great deal if its true though, can you check how much the ps is?300w?. maybe add a 6600GT and top it off at 1100 with a CRT monitor and Audigy 2 zs Gamer(i like the bundle) and itll be a sweet cheap game rig.
Why the hell would they make a 256kb l2 cache chip???? I guess we can see why 2.4ghz would command a low rating. In apps where the l2 cache is not a big deal this chip could be quite the performer....
I wonder if they are wounded chips where the cache had some defects so they disbaled a portion of it....Kinda like the M0 stepping P4's being EE chips where the l3 cache failed...
Only in certain apps will the lack of cache take a performance hit...
If cache made no difference then AMD's whole PR rating would be in shambles....Look at the pr rating and speed of the 3800+ 754 since it has the 1mb of l2 cache. It obviously makes a difference...
I know there was a story a while ago about some mobile processor being like this. It was a 2800+ i think, with 256kb of L2 cache. Sounded right as it was a Socket A cpu, but the owner took the laptop apart and it was a skt754 processor. CPUID said it was a Clawhammer 2800+ skt 754 with 256kb's of cache, but it didnt support 64bit apps, so it's like a Athlon XP 2800+ in a skt754 version...wierd...
The socket 754 Semprons have SSE2, the socket A ones do not.
My guess here is that they crippled the L2 cache on an Athlon 64 and ramped up the CPU speed to compensate. Their whole naming scheme is based on equivalency to Intel processors anyway. So a 3300 will typically perform on par with a Intel P4 3.3ghz processor. That means they can fudge with it, add cache, raise clock speeds, and still get the same "equivalency" with their Intel counterparts. Whats in a name anyway?
it's a good chip. i actually bought a hp a810n . fast as hell(well at least compared to a p4 2.66 and a celly 466mhz) nice for ocing(does 3000+ speeds[1.8ghz] at 1.2V[auto clocks down when idleing]). BTW, ut comes ith a uATX mb so you might want to look out for that. also, the onboard video is almost as bad as a rage pro.
