8GB DDR3 desktop memory has gone from £31 (Jan 2013) to £51 (current) on the Crucial site (not the cheapest source, but most RAM prices have altered a similar way).

The only prices that seem to be steadily coming down are HDD prices from what I've seen. Everything else (re: desktop PC build components) seems to have gone up, the occasional item staying the same.

Not many people would know what UDIMM versus RDIMM are, actually.

Heck, I am an SMP multi socket fangirl and I barely know.

LOL yea I def. don't remember those days. I think when I started building RAM was like $70 for 128gb sticks. Can't remember exactly. It was about 2001 when I started really getting into building/playing on a pc.

$70 for 128gb sticks eh? Yea RAM prices have definitely gone up since.

4 months ago I bought a G.Skill 2x4gb 1600 kit for $28.99. Just built a budget AMD rig and payed $29.99 for a 2x2gb 1333 kit. Ridiculous.

Just months ago you could buy 8GB kits of ram for $29.99 and 16GB kits for $59-$69 everyday of the week on sale.

Really wish i had stocked up!

I didn't notice any price jump at all :-O
In fact, the memory I bought half a year ago is down to 50% its original price.

lol I don't think so :p I originally payed about 170 eur for my 16GB Vengeance kit back in last july, and nowadays it's being sold for 100 (ehm ok, not exactly half, but still very significant jump) in the same shop.

This is certainly an exception if true. Across the board all memory prices are up & will continue to go up. All news outlets report the same as they stopped producing them & the demand from tablets is pushing the prices up.

Glad I bought my 32GB of Ripjaws X 1866 back in Black Friday for $120. It's $250 in Newegg now.

Sorry to necro thread but I decided I fancied another 8GB and it's damn £75. What the hell happened?! Seriously, in 2012 I bought the same 8GB for £37.77.

It's double. I mean literally double. o_O

What happened was a shift to more profitable DRAM production for tablets and phones, along with a huge fire at a DRAM manufacturing plant in China.

I doubt they'll be coming down any time soon, so better consider how badly you need that extra RAM! My 16GB purchased 12 months ago has been a far better investment than gold this year!

On the other hand, I paid £100 for 4GB dual channel DDR3-1600 in mid 2010, now it's less than a third of that price. Yay.

Makes me glad I bought 32GB ( 8 x 4GB ) of Samsung "magic" ram last year before the meteoric price hike. I put 4 sticks in my current machine. The other 4 sticks are in storage for my future HTPC and fileserver upgrade, hopefully before the end of the year. Normally I try not to buy any technology unless I have immediate need for it because technology tends to get cheaper over time, but in this case it worked out for me - a year later the prices are still higher than what I paid for it. I guess sometimes you just get lucky. I also loaded up on hard drives just before the hard drive manufacturer consolidation/Taiwan floods hit so I didn't have to buy any hard drives when Seagate/WD were price gouging everyone.

just like oil prices.....

too low = cut production = prices go up
too high = glut the market till repeat of above cycle

My manufacturer of choice, Crucial, doesn't even offer the premium model I'm looking for in 2GB size. 4GB is the smallest they are manufacturing these days (at the high end).
