When did backing into parking spots become the new hotness?

Everywhere I drive and park now it seems like the majority of people are backing into their spots. This never used to be the case, and only the really cool people who were good at parking did it. Now everyone does it including the majority of people who suck at driving/parking and it wastes so much fucking time.

The only thing my wife and I could come up with was that since rear view cameras are now standard in cars, everyone thinks they can be cool and park using it, when in reality they are wasting everyone's fucking time including their own, doing 13 point turns just to get into a damn parking spot.

Whats the difference between them screwing up the back in verse the back up?

You have to be way more precise to back into a spot, especially when between two cars. And typically it requires multiple changes between going drive/reverse until they are positioned properly. Again, most people suck at parking and driving so I'm not talking about the cool guys who get it on their first tries.

When backing up, you just put it in reverse, then drive away.

I think it has to do with people being less considerate. As in the people driving in the parking lot don't give a shite about people backing out. So you back into a spot to make your exit easier.

I've seen plenty of people screw up backing out of a parking spot and take forever. I think its harder you can't see people or cars coming when there are cars on both sides of you.

Many people drive larger vehicles now. Its easier to back in since the front wheels turn so that way its easier to get out as well.

You see more of this with the rise of trucks and SUVs since gas is still pretty low. I park and take mass transit and its a pain to back out of a space but easier to back in when I park so I can exit easier as well. Again the front wheels have more room to turn when backing in and pulling out that way.

This is the reason I do it. If I'm going to a busy place, I've had too many times where a big ass SUV/truck is parked next to me and I'm basically backing out blind until I can see which is not fun. The rear view camera field of view is not a sufficient replacement in this case. I've learned that people/cars ignore or fail to see backup lights in most cases and expect you to wait for them. However, with the rear camera on my CX9, it is incredibly easy to back in almost as quickly as pulling in which eliminates those scenarios.

I’m an old person. Backing in depends on several factors.
I like putting driver door- to- driver door.
- This gives more room for both drivers to go in and out; especially if the spots are tight. And the drivers are most respectful to one another in general.
- If there is plenty of room, I drive straight in.
- If I’m a taxi service for the children, I’ll back in with more room on the passenger side and I have a view equivalent to having my back to the wall in a social hall/event.
- If kids are involved and I get out. Straight in is most likely as all convenience factors are gone.

I back in pretty much exclusively. It's very easy to do on the first try. The micromanaging assholes that worry about every little thing that triggers their obsessive traits can suck it.

I always like backing into a spot. Easier to get out since you can see if cars are coming. I always back into my driveway too for same reason.

Ever drive a truck? Much easier to pivot on the rear wheels to pull into a space.

Its really supposed to the the better way to park, and standard in areas with really tight parking. Easier to make adjustments with the steering on the rear going in. Easier to see and less dangerous exiting a space. Really nice when they have reverse angled spots to encourage it.

Rarely back in unless I have something to load. I hate waiting for people spending 10 minutes trying to back into a space.

I have to back in when parking at work because of the concrete blocks at the front of the spots. They are tall enough that my bumper rides up on them and half of them have a metal post sticking up out of each side that I’ll catch the bumper cover on if I park straight in.

If you don’t like it then you’re free to pay for the repairs to my car for parking straight in. Otherwise, tough shit.

Some work places require it (they did at the Schlumberger Sugar Land campus when I worked there for part of a summer years ago). I never knew why really but I'm guessing it's due to a safety thing as that seems to be why a company would mandate it.

I only back into my apartment spot cause there's no one around when I'm doing it, although I've been known to do it in a public lot on the rare occasion. I'm usually quite good at it and get it in one try a majority of times. Yes, I am a pimp gangster.

If it is a drive through type spot, I drive in so that the front of the car is now facing out. If it is not a drive through spot, I always back the car into the space. It makes exiting it later much easier and safer.

my wife's work requires EVERYBODY to back into a spot. they claim it is for safety reasons... so when you leave your spot after your shift you can see better coming out of the spot and not run somebody over.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
