when did anti-fanboys become worse than fanboys?

No Lifer
as a tangent of the current apple/samsung thread, when the hell did anti-fanboys become more annoying than fanboys?

it's a huge trend i've noticed at least a couple years back.

that thread is a perfect example of it. pretty much any apple thread is a perfect example of it. the same thing happened in the console forum around e3 when microsoft announced their plans for the xbox1. 95% of the posts in the thread were from the sony camp just trashing xbox1. the same thing goes for pretty much any windows thread that we see on these forums, or any thread about a popular movie like gravity or avatar. i remember a recent thread about 3d as well and it was mainly people just bashing 3d.

i also notice it big time when i go out with 2 of my buddies and i pull out my iphone4 and they have their galaxy's or some other larger android phone and keep saying how small it is, etc. but they can never answer the question when i ask them why it needs to be bigger. the answer is always "just because".

so when did this revelation happen? when did the anti-fanboys become worse than the fanboys? was it social media becoming mainstream so now everyone thinks their opinion matters, so they just spew it out there? maybe i also don't get it because i don't have any brand loyalty and just buy what it is that i want to buy regardless of who makes it.

Basic human psychology. Before the internet, which gave people the ability to find and discuss products with other people who have similar interests, it wasn't as easy to show the world what "tribe" you belong to.

It really was limited to politics, religion, and sports. Once we identify with a team, Church, or Party, we basically become "fanboys". The side we chose is obviously superior to the others. We overlook or downplay negative attributes, and over-emphasize the positive ones. Anything that does not fit our dogma or preconceptions is trivialized.

Instead of avatars (like mine 😛 ) and signatures that clearly display what "side" we are on, you would wear a team jersey, or put ugly bumper-stickers on your car with religious/political slogans. Jesus fish anyone?

Walk into any dive or sports bar at about 8PM, and you can hear conversation about those three subjects that sounds a lot like PS3vXbox, AMD v Nvidia, Apple v Andriod, etc.

Yeah I think it's been around forever, OCGuy is right. There's fanboys and then there's haters of fanboys. In New England, I see it a lot with sports - it can get pretty bad with fights, tire slashing, etc.

Don't forget about cars!! Cars aren't really a big thing up here in the frigid north, but they were huuuuuuge in the south. Ford people, Chevy people, etc. Chevy sinks like a rock! Fords are Fixed Or Repaired Daily! I'd rather push a Chevy than drive a Ford! Hahahaha.

Missed that one! Usually when someone brings cars into a thread, it is a terrible analogy. Not this time. 😛

Hipsters thrive on trying to not associate with anything and putting down those who do as uneducated and sellouts. I blame the hipsters and hipster wannabes.

I finished my anti-phase a few years ago: I like "shitty" pop music, popular products because I'm too lazy to do my own research, and cheap clothes.

I'm putting this in eye of the beholder category. You're a terrible fanboy so you probably think the anti-fanboys are even worse as a result.

I've beem guilty of something like this, and I attribute it to an instinctive desire to balance out the universe.

'Look at how cool my [product] is! It's the best thing on the planet! Oh I love it so much and you're a silly goose to consider anything else.'

I could say '[other product] is superior in [ways] and costs far less money.'

But it becomes tiresome and it just starts coming out as out as YOUR SHIT IS SUCH TERRIBLE SHIT THAT SETTING IT ON FIRE WOULD BE A WASTE OF FIRE AND ALSO YOUR MOTHER IS A FUCKING CANKEROUS WHORE.

I have things I like and thigns I dislike but I am not a fanboy or anti-fanboy of anything in particular. I have my own reasons for staying away from apple products, but I don't hate on them. I have found that people who love them can't understand why anyone wouldn't want one...so..take that as you will. I ultimately don't put a whole lot of devotion to any particular company because they've all been proven to be crap at some time or another. You have to take each product as it's own entity...regardless of who made them. There's a lot more going on in the background than we usually know as consumers.

On the other hand as someone else stated you fall deeply in the fanboy realm so it is probably why it affects you more than others, because as soon as someone says anything negative about something you like, you instantly class them as fanboys of "insert product here"

As usual, I take issue with your take on things.

First, with phones, around here, its as bad as the GPU or CPU forums. Frankly though if you can't understand why people might want a newer phone with different features (like larger displays) then I don't even know what to say. You seriously can't understand why some people might want larger phones?

Second, um, sorry, but there was, and still are a lot of valid reasons to not like what Microsoft is doing with the Xbox One. What you say there is so horribly oversimplified, frankly its straight up bullshit. It was not just Sony fanboys, and um, did you miss how the backlash over all that stuff got Microsoft to change things? But yeah, it was just anti-fanboys bitching. 🙄

OP, the problem you have is you can't actually see when there's valid things to be critical about. You're a total hypocrite too. You've trashed shit in exactly the same way you complain about others doing, then sit there and chastise people over it. For instance, I remember you complaining about Tara Reid being on some dumbass talk show thing on Shark Week. But in another thread people pointed out how Discovery was filling Shark Week with some bullshit (like they're stupid bullshit trying to act like Megalodon is still alive and has been encountered recently), you had one of your little bitchfits.

Plus, you ignore people's arguments and try to act like its people bitching just to bitch. Most of the time there's even actual legitimate discussion going on and then you pop in and do the usual "of course AT doesn't like something that's popular" and add nothing to the discussion yourself. Like when you popped into a headphone thread to bitch about people not liking Beats. Nevermind that you were talking totally out of your ass on the subject and people were making valid reasons for not liking it (including ones that completely contradicted what you were claiming), that didn't stop you from sharing your opinion, did it?

Its like you seriously cannot fathom people having opinions different from yours. I'm calling bullshit again on your "social media makes everyone feel like they should get opinions and I don't get it", because um, you share yours plenty so why it pisses you off so much when others do I don't know.

Plus, um, yes, actually everyone is entitled to their opinions. That's kinda one of the awesome things about America. So the real question is why do you hate America purbeast?

Anything that makes anyone feel superior is going to be exploited on the Internet. Anti-fanboi-dom gained traction.

Now wait until the anti-anti-fanboi movement starts.

Simply remind them you don't have to compensate by way of the size of your phone. That will end that conversation quickly enough. Or, you'll see their cocks.

Oh, they're still around. Go into ATG and make fun of BMW.

there were very valid reasons to hate on XBox1 as a response to their first reveals of the console. Hatred well deserved, and if you think it was simply because of sony fanboys--then you have blinders on. Good thing about that is Microsoft managed to listen to the criticisms and fixed some things before the release (the whole "renting" your games model or whatever it was).

Other things mentioned also deserve hatred for very obvious reasons: 3D.

im only gonna reply to this one because your first one claims things about me that i never even said. but when did i ever say i can't understand why other people might want a new phone or larger screen? i never once said that. i said i ask them why i, as in me not them, would need a larger screen, and they can't answer that.

i know there were/are valid criticisms of the xbox1. that doesn't mean the majority of the posts were about that. if you don't believe me, go back through the official xbox1 thread around when e3 was last year. there were a couple people who WANTED the all digital console, and about 99.9% of the anti-ms people couldn't understand why. pretty much every anti-ms person also couldn't fathom the idea that some people didn't mind that the kinect had to be plugged in all of the time. there's really no need to bring up all of the examples, but go look at the thread around e3 of last year and you will have pages upon pages of the anti-ms people in there.
