When did 24x cd-roms for notebooks first become available?

I bought a 24x speed cd-rom from a person on ebay who sells a lot of cd-roms. Right away, the drive didn't sound loud enough or high pitched enough to be a 24x drive. So I ran nero CD speed and sure enough, the drive is only an 8x. I also noticed that the drive label says it was made in 1999 which I think was before the time 24x notebook drives were even available. So does anyone know when 24x drives first became available?

Right at this minute I'm repairing a Dell Latitude CPi that was purchased in the 2H of 1998. It was purchased and shipped with a 20X variable CDROM so it's not unlikely that 24X drives were available at that time or shortly afterwards.

Thats what i mean.

They have been around quite a while now.

As for CDR drives, 24x BUILT IN is fairly newish.

A year or so old

Look for a program called Cdvdinfo. It should tell you the speed. Maybe it's 24x MAX.

I might give it a shot but I tried nero cd speed on my other notebooks drive and it correctly read its speed as 24x at the end so it seems pretty accurate.
