When did 20% become the new tipping standard?

I usually tip about 30% because I know wait staff have to deal with assholes all day. Reading this thread reminds me of that. :colbert:

"I leave a big fat tip so that they know the girl serving me AND my date know the rest of my cock is big and fat too: I have no concern for how charitable giving might best serve society, just how it makes me look and feel"

that's cool. now i won't feel so bad leaving a 0% tip. your 30 and my 0 averages out to 15% between the both of us. win/win/win!

usually what happens is you tip your bartender well and you can get a free round of shots or free drinks every time you go. we used to have this one bartender and we'd drink all night and the tab would end up being something like $30.

As I have recently learned from Bar Rescue, this is a form of theft on the part of the bartender.

It's 12%-15% when I'm alone, but if we have our toddler with me it's often 20% since we'll be leaving bits and pieces of food on the floor. She doesn't get all crazy and start dumping cheesy nacho on the floor or anything, but it usually does look like someone should sweep(and not me) after we leave, so here's the extra 5%.

I used to be one of those yuppie suckers who tipped on take-outs, too, but I also stopped that nonsense.

$1 tip on all tabs

...and be glad you got that much!

tax here is 8.625%. I just double the tax - sucks for them.

One time I fuct up in Hawaii forgetting that they don't charge 8%+ there... I think it was only 2-4%. I even hung around while the wife went to the bathroom... d'oh.

I rarely only tip 15%. I've only tipped 0% once but that was for horrendous service where I had to flag down other servers to get a refill, the dessert I ordered, and my check. I usually do min 20% then round up so that I'm tipping a whole dollar amount. If it's a bartender I usually tip a bit more, especially if I'm hooked up a bit. Personally I find it a bit rude to tip only 15% and you should only tip below 15% if you got bad service or you're a total dickhead.

I see no need to tip on takeout orders. I usually don't unless I'm in a generous mood.

I was out with the wife a few months ago and she told me that 20% was the standard tip and I told her that it was not. I told her 15% is still the standard. I don't mind tipping more but 15% is the standard.

Went to a Chili's for lunch, and they had these tablet things at each table you could use to pay your bill and leave. It popped up with a suggested 20% tip. I scrolled that bitch back to 15%. Actually saved me a cent too, because I was going to leave $2, but 15% was $1.99 😎
