Carbon fiber is a fiber made from carbon (you can get a more detailed explanation if you do a Google search). Its tensile strength can be extremely high, exceeding that of the best maraging steels, and its compressive strength is also excellent. When used in an binder like thermosetting epoxy, its flexural strength is, again, extremely high.
