What I'm afraid of is the price of RAM for my new system that you see in my sig.

Hopefully it doesn't go up by another 50% between now and June, cause it will if prices increase as they have this month.

That's gona HURT in the pocket book. 8(

Hey Kristopher....... Good news indeed for those of us waiting a bit to upgrade to 939. Quick question... Can you tell us is this June 1st PCI-E / 939 is Nvidia / VIA / SIS or is that not allowed (NDA)?

Also.... any idea if any of the motherboard builders are going to use any of the 939 chipsets and port this to a BTX form factor board? Future proofing for at least a year??

Yeah... I'm guessing Nvidia's boards? I'm think the June 1 chipset will be VIA's chipset... based on what I saw from the roadmap?? I can't wait :D

Quick question, is socket 939 gonna be for the FX chip only, or will it also work with the lower end single channel now 754 chips? I was under the assumption that all future A64's would share this socket. But if that is the case, then what exactly is the point of AMD's future chip code named Paris? It is supposedly just a standard Athlon XP, 32 bit only, but will fit a socket 754. I could understand it if they make it for 939, but what point is there making it for a socket which is being phased out?

Socket 939 will merge the FX 940 pin and AMD 64 754 pin into one 939 socket. The 754 will now be used for the AMD XP and the 940 will still be used by the Opteron processor. If you are going 64 (like me soon) you will be using 939. There is a write up on Paris at X-bit and I think Anandtech?

So what's coming out in June, PCI-X or PCI Express? When will we see a full PCI Express solution?

When is PCI-E going to be released in Canada?...

I was planning on buying myself a whole new system around June 6th but is it worth it if PCI-E is so close?

How much is a system with PCI-E going to cost?

There will probably be an A64 3500+ which runs at 2.2GHz but only has 512kB L2 Cache (it does have Dual Channel RAM though). The first benchmarks on x86-secret.com suggest that it's a little worse than the 3400+ (S754) in most applications though.

The 939 equivalents of the Socket 754 model numbers will be larger by 100. For example, the AMD A64 3400+ on 754 will be the AMD A64 3500+ on 939.

The article is here:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1985

Also, the 939 A64 (non FX) will have 512K cache, vs. the ones for 754 which have 1MB. AMD has indicated that the Dual Channel capabilities brought to the 939 A64 line will compensate for the less cache. AT has indicated they will definitely be checking into that one.

Check all the old CPU articles, and that should wet your whistle.

Myself, I have been holding off a long time for 939 and am getting quite impatient. Very soon now. I only hope that boards will hit the market, and be available for purchase, QUICKLY!

Kristopher (above)... said June 1. He writes articles for anandtech. Unless there have been changes since a few weeks ago?
