When can we expect to see Crysis (2007) level of visuals ?

Hi folks.

Recently, I started playing Crysis (2007) again.

And wow.. I'm surprised (again) with the level of visuals this game from 2007 provides.

Without any mods, at 2560x1600 resolution with everything at very high (good'ol DX10) and 4xMSAA + 4xTrSSAA, this game STILL looks like a visual masterpiece.

Only other game I can think of that may be in the same league in term of visual quality is Metro 2033.

I know there are other games which provides amazing visuals... like Crysis 2, Battlefield 3, Max Payne 3 (really well done tessellation). But in my humble opinion, I think Crysis is still better looking game overall.

I also liked RAGE in terms of visuals. I know many people complain about low resolution textures in this game. But I think the art direction is superb. The game sometimes looks like a living, moving painting. Its absolutely gorgeous. (Don’t nitpick individual textures, but absorb the scene as a whole and its breath-taking. The screenshots don’t do it justice, the animation and level geometry are excellent.)

Have I missed anything ? Are there any other games I should check out ?
Sometimes, I can't believe I'm still talking & praising about the game from 2007 in terms of visuals. :(

At that setting the game will be a slideshow unless you're running a trio of 7970s/680s or something.

A few of the indoor areas had nice lighting, but most of it was bland, especially the snowing outdoor areas. I was never impressed with the visuals in that game.

Other games that have comparable outdoor visuals to Crysis: Serious Sam 3, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Bulletstorm (background city landscape areas), Stalker 3 during the day, Aliens vs Predator 3.

Skyrim with high res textures and an ENB mod (incl. bloom, brightness/contrast, ssao, dof etc.) is pretty damn gorgeous.

To make things even worse, load up a few texture mods and a more realistic TOD mod and bam, you have it going up yet another level. The one area Crysis fell flat on its face was it's varying texture quality. With a decent texture pack there is still nothing that can match it.

The only gripe I have is the "refresh rate" of the shadows at a distance. The best example of this is the level where you discover one of the science team dead with ice shards in his back. Just after this is a clearing in the jungle with a canopy of trees above you. The shadows in the distance update only a few times a second so it creates a really unrealistic shimmer effect. But that's the problem with great looking games - the better a game looks, the less it takes to break the immersion with buggy textures, iffy shadows etc.

Crysis 2 gets quite close, but the tacked on tessellation is quite frankly, crap. Look at any brick wall with graffiti on it and see how it was literally slapped on without proper integration. Tessellation should kick off a new era in visual fidelity but it's not going to happen until it's embraced by console developers en masse. But this looks promising.

I never purchased the game but i told myself when the Crysis demo which is my favorite benchmark of choice can be maxed out at 1080p very high and sustain 60fps or higher on a pc build,i would purchase the game and well 5 years later and a i7 3770k and dual gtx670 is what it took so might be buying the game this week

The game i doubt will never be beat as far graphics but i am looking for that next system killer pc soon enough so hope Crytek can make a pc exclusive Crysis 4....turning the crysis series into watered down console ports was the worst idea period.

It was a great idea from a sales perspective for Crytek to bring it to consoles. Unfortunately we lost graphical progress, although I haven't seen Skyrim with mods so I can't judge fairly.

what made crysis' graphics so impressive was that it was on a tropical island.

its much harder to make nature (trees, grass, shrubs) realistic versus buildings and other materials.

OP, play Witcher 2. IMO it's surpassed Crysis in terms of graphics.

Same WRT the Metro 2033. Never understood the hype around it. Admittedly I didn't play it but the screenshots or videos on Youtube didn't justify Crysis-level performance hit.

tbh I found BF3 campaign much better looking than Crysis. BC2 was probably better looking as well

IDK guys, the graphics might have gotten a few more shiny lights and shadows, but it still looks very abstract compared to real life. Which is why I don't understand the draw of owning the absolute best hardware, because all you're really getting is a rather weak substitute for taking a walk outside.

I'm not saying it's not good or better, but it just seems kinda silly to put so many coins in it.

What do I need to do to do this? Would you post links/instructions please?

I looked at videos of ENB Skyrim and I could not tell a difference between it and my regular Skyrim on ultra settings.

90% of the game Metro 2033 was "indoors" with excellent lighting and textures and yes the game was bland for it was an apocalyptic waste land so "bland" was very fitting for the environment & atmosphere IMO.

Meh, I can't play Saints Row 3 in the real world without either dying (with no $500 revival fee) or spending the rest of my life in prison.

And real life doesn't look anything like Borderlands. Where are the outlines?

I've also yet to see a dragon overhead while taking a walk in the real world.

No lightsabers either. Stupid physical laws!

A few games that I've played that match Crysis imo are...

Witcher 2
Crysis 2 with high res texture pack
Skyrim with high res texture pack and a few tweaks
Metro 2033 (although being a corridor shooter gives it an unfair advantage)

Then you have not really played Crysis 1 on PC the way it's talked about when people claim it is the best looking game ever and it is the best looking game ever IMO modded at leased.

If you expect more taxing graphical effects, next gen consoles should probably help, even if they won't be exactly graphical powerhouses. If you mean art direction, no idea. Valve and Blizzard are already doing pretty well by focusing on a great art direction instead of graphical fidelity (Diablo 3 looks pretty great for a game that runs on a toaster).
