Is the price of electricity is what's keeping Euro's out of the crypto coin craze?
I wonder.... my elec bill is stupidly high, I can't even think of trying to mine coin, my last 2 bills were around $1000 (CDN).

Except for the fact that AMD is not making "loads" of money due to the fact that they are supply constrained and due to the fact that retailers are (presumably) the ones marking up the price in the first place.
Only the most rabid fanATIc would suggest that these ridiculously inflated USA prices are somehow a good thing for gamers.
True, and the worst thing is :
If (when really) the gov't decides to shut this down, or it crashes for other reasons, then AMD won't be selling many more cards, the market will be glutted with heaps and heaps of used ones.
Which might be compounded even more if AMD is trying to build up stock to take advantage of this craze. If crypto currencies crash while AMD continues to try to ramp up production they may be left with a lot of new stock in a super saturated market.True, and the worst thing is :

Hah, I want to see the posts in the forum, asking how to get 8x 7950 crossfire working. I bet there will be so many 7950 showing up on ebay and craigslist at that point, they will be super cheap. Just need those ASICs to come out (or perhaps, I'm hoping, Nvidia somehow decides to add the hardware instruction that makes mining efficient and blows away AMD performance lead for mining).
Cryptocoin isn't going to get shut down. Not in a million years.True, and the worst thing is :

Isn't there a law about starting competing currencies against the dollar in the US? I'm pretty surprised this thing has gone on as long as it has.Cryptocoin isn't going to get shut down. Not in a million years.
Can't AMD just quietly raise the MRSP they are selling these cards to retailers for? There's no reason a MRSP has to stay static. Just look at the price of oil for example.

If there are heaps and heaps of cheap 280x, 290 and 290x cards on ebay, then Nvidia sales will suffer also, not just AMD.
Same could have been said for NVIDIA when it dominated distributed computing. And this IS also true. Though AMD may get a bit more of a bad rap from used cards that may or may not have been treated well during their time.

Yes, there is.
The thing about the US Gov't is that it's SLOW. But, when it starts cranking along, it really starts getting aggressive. CISPA/SOPA/etc, if you look at the sponsors and voting records, are split issues for Dems, and nearly 100% support from Reps. Well, as soon as the Reps get a majority back in the House AND Senate, there goes the neighborhood. The establishment Republicans want to eliminate Bitcoin (a few have been kind enough to say they want to regulate it instead), while a handful of fringe libertarian Republicans want to embrace it.
But one thing I can absolutely guarantee : the Government will NOT be able to resist getting involved. It's just what they do.
Wanted to post this to respond to some who say that the rapid increase in the R9 290/290x isn't going to hurt AMD.
Rig 2 below used to have 2 GTX660s in SLI. When the R9 290x and later 290 debuted I seriously considered buying a R9 290 because of the price point and performance. I decided to wait a little because of the Christmas season coming and the likelihood I would receive Newegg gift cards. At the Debut of the 290 it was Slightly above the MSRP of $399 and the EVGA GTX 780 Classified was @$200 more. I thought about the Classified because it was really powerful etc. etc but a R9 290 at @$400 was just too hard to pass by. I waited. When I purchased the Classy it was $539 and the STOCK R 290 (if you could get it) was less than $30 cheaper. It was a NO BRAINER. Get the Classy. Just check the lowest price of a R9 290 at the Egg - $599!
Nvidia has me tied up for another generation.
