Given all the speculation about Fermi cost/performance/yields, when do you think I'll be able to actually get one after launch? I know there's a ton of things at play to answer that question certainly, but if I get a rough idea, I can start socking away some cashish (i.e., $20/week from now 'til July). Maybe for different reasons, but the HD5970 was "launched" mid-Nov. '09 and it's still very hard to find, if not impossible...and overpriced.

Is there a "Perfect Storm" of conditions that will drive the prices of 5870's down? Is that likely?

How many Fermi could possibly be available at launch? (Assumes Cebit?)

I like this scenario...

Fermi hard launches around Cebit with good supply and beats 5870 by 30% or so...albeit for more $. Card is hot, but has a pwnsorz wtfbbqsauce cooler that manages it. GreenTeam can only charge $400 for such a card driving 5870's down to sub $300.

Whadya think...?

Does that include buying one of the fermi-certified cases and a 1200 watt PSU?

I kid, I kid. That won't be necessary unless you try to run two of them. Three will probably require you to install 25 amp fuses.

LOL...true, who knows what you'll have to buy to run one? If I do get one, I'll prolly upgrade my pants first cuz of my e-peen.

For this to happen NV would have to launch a card that actually beats the 5870 on price/performance, and the general consensus is that this is not likely.

I foresee the 5870 maybe dropping to the $350ish level in 3-4 months, and even that's optimistic. It's now 4 months after the launch, and they are still selling above the original MSRP of $379.

edit: ...or not... 5870 for $368

That's what I picked up on Monday. They even have one for $352.

That's local only though. Don't you end up paying about $385 on that after CA sales tax? We don't have Micro Center in WA, but if we did that card would be close to $390 after tax. I was bummed about not having Micro Center locally when I couldn't get a $200 i7 920, but pretty glad not to pay 9.8% sales tax on my $1200 MacBook Pro.

$400 for the fastest Fermi, the GTX480, is impossible in my view, even in a few months. I think Fermi would cost around $450-$500 for the GTX470, and +$600 for the GTX480.

And probably both would end up faster than the 5870, but slower than the 5970. Competition is good, I can't wait to see how these cards will perform.
