when buying a macbook

In fact, I think if you buy directly from Apple, you always get the latest version of the OS, which isn't the case if you buy from some other resellers.
 
Well, a Mac from Apple may or may not have the latest version installed actually. It will definitely have the latest 10.x release, but perhaps not the latest 10.x.y release on it. It all depends on when they made it and then boxed it up. Heck, even my Build-To-Order MacBook was 1 versions out of date when I got it. And my restore disks were 2 versions out of date when I got it.
