I usually make a CD with songs I want to hear right now......it will last a couple weeks, then get lost or tossed. I only have a few CD that are still in rotation that I made a while back.
LOL, I have CD's I burned in my truck right now from 1995, all but one still play great, even the so called "junk" gold ones! The one that makes a "tick" noise on one track has a scratch on it from my long dead dog who stepped on it while I was changing discs and had placed the CD on the console and he decided to climb up there.
It takes me hours to create an mp3 disc for the car, because I try to set it up so nothing will sound too out of place when it's on random, and will sound decent when played straight through as well.
I think it's fun to listen to old mix cds that I've made, just to see what I was into at the time. I have a set of four discs I made when I went to Florida about 5 years ago, and listening to them also brings back a lot of memories.

When I burn mix CD's, this is what I do. When I burn full albums, I usually add extra mix stuff to the end to fill in the extra. Then I always have a nice surprise when my Led Zeppellin song is over.
I take some time to pick tracks that I know I like and won't get tired of right away. Having an MP3 HU helps since I can usually add ~100 tracks to a single disc.
I burn at least a cd a week. And keep 'em around, with dates. So, when I go back and want a random cd, I can look at the date and sorta remember what tracks I was into at the time.
