When building a computer...

Since at this point I'm overly paranoid about doing any sort of damage from ESD, I was thinking about something. Can I just use surgical gloves when I assemble the computer? My father is a CRNA and I could just have him bring back those rubber surgical gloves they use in the operating room...that should negate the effects of ESD regardless of my charge, correct? I'll be assembling in a relatively non-static environment anyway, but I wanted to ask because this could just be another relief for me if it seems logical.

Has anyone done this before or have advice on if it would work?

Thanks

There's a reason professionals use anti-static straps and mats rather than rubber surgical gloves.

Just touch a heater every so often, or other fixture that is grounded. I tend to do my builds with everything on the anti-static bag the motherboard comes in, before I move it into the case. Never shorted anything yet. Just don't be silly and wear a wollen jumper and slippers and slide around on the carpet building up charge.

LOL Roguestar, I think that goes without saying...Jeff7181, I've never seen a professional build a computer, that's why I'm asking...I have no idea if they wear rubber gloves or not, but it seems to be that it would make sense...I was simply asking. I'm planning on putting it together on a glass table, but I just wanted another precaution.

Check out this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=27&threadid=2114445 for various PsOV on dealing with static issues. I've relied on the method I put forward there for over 20 years. Wrist straps and antistatic mats are useful too, but good ones are pricey. I wouldn't rely on cheap ones.

See fellow ATer, MechBgon's new builders web site for his views on static: http://www.mechbgon.com His are basically the same as mine except that I use the case I'm working on as the "grounded item" to touch regularly esp. while handling add-on cards, mobos, memory modules, CPUs, etc. Also great to clip your wrist strap to if you choose to use one.

I never bother with ESD straps or anything...even when I was working in a computer repair store we never did that. Just leave the PSU plugged in and touch the metal of your case if you go walking around and you'll be fine.
