When boats are referred to as "she" does it make your ears cringe?

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to go off on people that refer to boats as women. And after watching "Mighty Ships" on Discovery HD for a while, my ears are bleeding! My common-sense-o-meter says what I should be hearing is "it" not "she".

Yes I know the stupid tradition, but I think only sailors should use that. Laymen should just call it "it" and get "it" over with. I mean please. Why do people have to be so hard headed about this?

And if one day I purchase a boat, you know I will call it "it". I may in fact name it "It" just to make a damn point. Anyone who tries to correct me will be thrown overboard.

then you could act like you're 8-10 years old and be like "Oh, she...it's a beauty! Shits a beauty!"

zing!

Yes. They did the same thing with the Mars Exploration Rovers on some of the related forums. They're robots. They are utterly without gender.

"It."

I disagree. I certainly disagree.

You ever have a vehicle that starts, well, acting up, threatening to strand you on the side of the road somewhere?
You end up saying, "Come on baby, you can do it. Just work for me baby."
Or when it has troubles even turning over, you say, "Come on baby, I know it's in you.... ahh there it is. Good job ol' girl."

I don't think it should be only for sailors.
It's definitely more of a male thing though.
Our various vehicles, land, sea or air, are there to serve us, and serve us well dammit!

Yeah, why yield to centuries of tradition just because it strikes you wrong.

That's the NERD way though.
Socially confused, and just cannot/refuse to accept tradition or cultural habits. 😉

"I shun your common, normal behavior. I stand out, because I'm a hipster who refuses to blend in like the sheep!"
🙄

Yes, I have done the "come on baby" thing before and it was quite satisfying. However as soon as I got home it was "damn thing almost refused to start again". 😉

Not really. It is a bit stupid, but what's the point of changing? It's kind of like you Americans and your measurement system. We all know metric is better, but we don't try force you to use metric (misguided though you are).

And now you know why we refer to these temperamental, high maintenance things as women.

Nerds always "want" to do something. They always "want" to yell at someone for doing something they don't like. They always "want" to set people straight. They always "want" to fuck someone up. But they never do anything. It's all in their puny little heads. These little fantasies are all they will ever have. That is what makes them nerds. Coulda, woulda, shoulda.

You won't throw anyone overboard. You won't do anything. Everyone knows this.

Damn! First, spaceman is being coherent and now, theflyingpig is being conservative mainstream.
It's the Apocalypse! We're all going to die! Run, arm yourself.

OP, you are heading further and further off the deep end. I fully expect to soon see a thread by you where you rant about how bacon is yucky.

Stop now and get help.

It sounds right to me.
Its an arbitrary and rather common thing in other languages actually, in french for example basically everything is gendered.

man rides woman, man also rides boat, since both are ridden by man it makes sense to associate one with another.
