when asking for time off from work...

for example, if you're taking a week off, do you tell your boss you're going to the carribean or attending a friend's wedding or just need time away from the office? or do you say 'i want these days off' and leave it at that?

(asking what you do personally, not what you should do)

I usually talk about what I'm doing, but more as a casual conversation thing than any sort of justification.

i will be honest... If that is the reason.. just say you are going out of town for a wedding.

It depends on what I'm doing. If I'm going out of town or anything like that, yeah. If I'm just doing it to sit on my arse and be lazy, no.

I work part time because of school so I need to be at school for a lab or something like that is always a great excuse to take time off from work.

"i'm planning on taking [date1] to [date2] for vacation. let me know if there is a problem with this."

actually i said this just yesterday:

hey dude, my wife wants to book tickets for a vacation in november, do we have anything going on...

and before i could even specify the dates my manager said

dude, don't worry, we have nothing major going on then, just book the tickets

No reason whatsoever needed with my line of work. However for special events it is possible to get free days off.

i don't use sick days, i don't get sick

Personal time off is personal. I sometimes will let them know if I feel like talking about it (going on a weekend trip to wine country) but half the time I won't. I figure taking regular days off without explanation is good practice for the day you want to take time off to interview somewhere else.
