When are we going to see X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter on a MMORPG scale?

I watched Czar's EVE Online video. While pretty, AFAIK it still amounts to turn-based fighting writ large. Lameness! I had quite a bit of fun with Earth & Beyond before I realized that it too was merely Everquest gone galactic.

Someone needs to give us a game like TIE Fighter or Freespace 2 where you do some first-person space combat in tiny fighters. Maybe as you gain combat experience you can get promoted and earn the ability to fly larger and larger crafts until you're capable of commanding a Star Destroyer or Corellian Corvette. I'd pay out the ass for this kind of gameplay!

So what's holding us back? Is it just impossible to send/receive that kind of dataflow and have everyone unlagged? Someone has to have a freaking solution!

Bandwidth limitations as well as limited processing power I assume. Can you imagine trying to render a battle scene when there are over 100 players on your screen.

My guess is that it's definately network related. If you've ever played Freespace 2, XvT/XWA, Decent 3, etc; you'll notice 1 fundamental problem: lag. Unlike any other real-time game(FPS, RTS, MMORPG, etc), space sims lack gravity and have a full 6 axis worth of freedom, meaning that traditional movement prediction techniquies(i.e. interpolation) don't work as well, meaning you have to compensate with more data and lower latency. With broadband, the data issue isn't huge, but the kind of latency such a game would need(sub-50 would be best), we still can't do that reliably.

PS her209, # of ships isn't a problem. FS2 can almost handle that many, to a point where if a FS2-quality engine were implemented today, it would definately be able to handle it, maybe more

Umm, hello, have you heard of the new 'Space' expansion for Star Wars: Galaxies yet?

From what I've heard(I'm not a SWG player), Space(if it's ever released) will be a small-scale "theme park"; you'll be with a dozen or so humans at best, not hundreds, and it won't be fast action based like XvT was.

You mean Jumpgate? Same idea, not set in SW universe, though. I Betaed it. It was fun, but I don't want to sell my soul to a mmorpg; I have grades to worry about. First person space sim at the MMORPG scale.

Apparently in the current version you can even build and own space stations and whatnot.
Heh, in the beta I was with the Relic Boards Armada. We had some good battles, and for a while we were one of the top squads.

Been out for a while.

Oh yeah, I remember that game, but if I recall each sector had a practical limit of like 20 people fighting at once. I was in the beta too, and after awhile it just wasn't competitive and the flaws were too numerous to enjoy the game. Didn't know people still played it!

At this point I'd like to post the words morning musume to see if forum member dc truly scans this board for any mention of his beloved band.

sorry, it took a while. i was busy watching a load of old morning musume shows from 2000. 🙂

edit: oh yeah, a space combat sim mmorpg would rule. 🙂

i dont know if you guys have ever played SWG, but you can easily have 50-60 people battling in the same area with no lag. i dont see why it would be any different with the space expansion.

i have been in caves with 100 players and 100 or more NPCs...everything was fine.

Read my previous post; 60 speed & gravity-restricted characters is a lot different than 60 space fighters.

: ) Amanda

That and we all know from the game TIE Fighter than the TIE Defender is heads and tails above anything the dumb goodguys had (but badguys even dumber for not taking advantage of such a fact, lol)

I'd love for an X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter to be remade, even if it were only largely single player.

Not really, if the only thing the network broadcasts is the objects position, you shouldn't have any lag at all. Granted you have a few more steps in figureing out how and where it will move, but you are still only sending coordinates back and forth.

Its called Jumpgate. Is this an old thread? Did I already post in this? edit: yes, I did.

Jumpgate is OK, but I'm not into the big leveling and money making you need to play a MMORPG.

About beta problems. I hear tell that it is a pretty good game these days. I think the 20 person/sector limit is out. You may want to do some research, because I think thats all that is out for you now.

Actually, here is a freeware one for you. I don't know much about it, as my computer has trouble running it (its powerful enough, but for some reason I get lots of graphical bugs and crashes.)

I don't know about player/sector limits or anything. Its got newtonian or simpliefied flight model options, though everyone knows only women fly with simplified on.
