Im asking because i dont wanna feel crappy after i do buy the v5 5500agp and hear that a new card is out... Would it be worth getting it now? or should i wait for something the next gen to come out? I saw the v5 for 135$ after PM @ Staples...

My current set up is:
Athlon 700, 384mb, voodoo3 2000,

would the v5 5500 make a good replacement? would i be able to notice a significant amount of difference in gameplay suchas Counter-Strike?

That's quite a good price. I'd say go for it. The next generation of cards might take a while to arrive.

well, look at it this way

1) The GTS, 5500 and the Radeon are going to be the only cards on the market (only 3d cards that are worthwhile) for the next 6 or so months, probably

2) The NV20, RAdeon-II and Spectre will probably be ANNOUNCED a few months into the new year, but won't be released until a few months after that (probably)

3) Look how long it took for DX7 features to get implemented into games. DX8 just came out. YOu won't see too many games use DX8 to it's fullest for quite some time.

For $135, the 5500 is an incredible buy.

yeah, if you always buy cards in the $150 and less range, you can never go wrong. Its not too expensive, you can always upgrade to the next powerful almost as good as the $400 version card later for $100-150 again

There seem to be quite a lot of people considering a V5 these days.

Call me a video card junkie if you will, but this is how I do things.

I buy top of the line revolutionary video products now and then. Voodoo2 when it came out and more recently a GeForceDDR last Christmas when they first hit the streets. I also like to buy filler cards to fill the gap. For instance to fill the gap between Voodoo and GeForceDDR I bought a Creative TNT2 for $130 and overclocked it to Ultra specs. Nice little project, put on a better heatsink and all that good stuff. My next big card purchase will be the NV20 probably. The way the price of the V5 is going I can easily see me picking one up on an impulse just to see what it is all about.
