When are the 74gig raptors being released? nt

I just hope they run cooler than the 36GB Raptor! But who knows, I don't know the engineering behind it so I have no guess.

Out of everything I noticed about the Raptors was they ran cold as stone. Did you have it stacked tight with another drive?

Cheers!

If there's no airflow over them then they get scorching hot, but mine's just warm to the touch.

Yeah...but not extremely tight, I left a good amount of room between them. I have 2 raptors running Raid 0. I burned my fingers on the Raptors they were running so hot! I was debating on a HD coolers, but I might just wait till the 74GB Raptors are out to see how they run, sell these and upgrade.

Ouch. I'm surprised to see them get that hot. I had one running sitting out not attached to anything and after a day it was lukewarm. Try that with a 15k drive and you have something that can keep a cup of java hot.

Try to cool the drives down! Extended runtimes at temps above 55C will most definitely shorten the life of the drive.

Cheers!

Wow...I envy you! I wish they were that cool, but unfortunately they aren't. At first I thought I just got stuck with bad drives...but whats the chances of getting two falty drives? Pretty much none. They run fine other than the heat issue, and most likely ill have to get HD coolers for them.

My neighboor has 4 Raptors in his machine and they are alittle warm...but still not as hot as mine. Ive been concerned with the long runtimes as well, and id hate to kill these drives considering they are only a few months old. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah they are way too hot. I was thinkin of buying one but when i saw it on my friend's pc i decided to wait for the next series. I think it's not so good for a HDD to be so overheated even though you can cool it.

I can't wait for the 74 gig raptor... I made the mistake of raiding two WDJB800s instead of buying a raptor. Now these worthless old drives can go in the trash and I can stop using freakin' SATA adapters.

Junk?? If you're such a speedfreak why don't you go for SCSI man??

Not everyone has scsi drives. I can't just pull a scsi drive out of my comp, take it over to my friends, and put it in his computer.

I wouldn't recommend "pulling" hard drives and carrying them around like that!

Get a 1394+USB1.1/2.0 enclosure that has 48bit LBA support and insert the jumbo ATA drive of your choice. Much easier if you ask me. You can even access firewire drives from DOS now!

Cheers!

hmm anyone else running a raptor with a sonata?? i kept the single fan setup, and my raptor is pretty hot, think its in danger?

Another 120mm fan can be mounted on the rear side(closest to mobo) of the drive cage, and would probably cool your drives nicely for ~ $10.

Why not add another fan?

Well according to techbargains November is the expected date. I wonder what the price on them would be, as I would love to stick two of them in raid 0.

heh heh heh... I imagine they will be...

Question... Does RAID 0 really make that much of a difference? Enough of a difference to make it worth the $$$ to buy 2 drives and have them show up as one?
Also, i was wondering if the the 73 Gig and the 37 gig would be the same speed, or would the 37 be faster because it's only one spindle?
