looking for a simple laptop in the $500 to $700 range with a second gen Core i5. i see i7's are shipping but nothing with core i5.

when the i7's came it seemed like dell and HP had systems shipping right away. same with last year when the Core CPU's first came out

HP will have their EliteBooks out mid-March, and Lenovo will have their new T420/T420s and T520 out towards the end of March. So, very soon....

thx

i'm looking at the Inspiron with the i5 and intel graphics. i want a 750GB hard drive and in the worst case will buy the cheapest discrete GPU to play Civ 5 or some old total war games

lately i've realized that between my wife and i we use our iphones and android phones more than computers so no reason to buy an expensive computer anymore. shopping list for this year is a cheap laptop and an ipad 2. i was going to buy the iphone 5 as well but ended up with the Inspire 4G

seen those

only thing is i don't want an i7, don't want to pay for it. i3 should be fine for me but i'll probably buy the i5

unless it's el cheapo at $500 or less i will never buy an HP laptop again. or only get it from costco

don't want to pay $1000 or more than $1000 for any laptop unless it's a Mac. at that price point i want support and prior experiences with dell/hp show me that their support is worthless

and personally don't want to pay more than $600 or $700 for a laptop. the 3 i have now sit closed most of the time. all i need it for is to hold itunes, photos and that's it. iphone/android/ipad will be used a lot more than my laptop

I got a Toshiba Qosmio X505 Q8100 in January with a Sandybridge i5.

It did get recalled but I'm not doing anything until the replacements come out.

Yes some OEM's got them earlier but the official release of the Mobile i5's wasnt until February.... and how can you use that thing? SO MUCH PLASTIC!

Yeah it is a lot of plastic but 18.5 inch screen and I can play wow on ultra at 60 frames and haven't had any issues with other games. It is a beast in size but I still manage to carry it with me on frequent business trips.

I'm sure I look ridiculous when I'm using it at the airport too.

starting march 10th costco is saying they are going to have an Acer laptop with a 2011 i3 CPU. 6GB RAM and 640GB hard drive for $599. might just get this one

Lenovo T420 will be out I think on March 22nd, for in the 700 range. I'll bet a 420 will be a better notebook than the Acer (at least as far as build and keyboard quality goes).

Why not wait until the end of March/start of April and then buy? Most major distributors will likely have the bulk of their Sandy Bridge notebooks released, or at minimum announced....

how much? but i'm not in a hurry

i dumped my desktop last year when i moved and have too much data on my work laptop. the personal laptop is a cheapie i need just to keep photos, itunes and whatever and sync iphones and ipad with

T420 will be the cheapest, will be in the $700 range. Maybe though reading your previous posts, that's too much laptop for you....could be you just need a cheapie for your light use.

The more I read about the T420, the more I like it. I'm in the market for a 14" laptop with interchangeable graphics (I don't need much graphics power but I want more than Intel graphics) and am leaning toward the T420.

I'll be looking forward to in-depth reviews and hope the price stays around $700.

going to have to check the price and i noticed that the 13" MBP is the SB Core i5. with my education discount it looks very tempting once i add in the adobe elements software

I checked the specs of the T420 and it looks nice, but I'm concerned about screen quality and lack of newer features like USB 3.0. It does have an esata port but the rest seems like a feature list from a mainstream dell. It does have the legendary thinkpad construction but otherwise the feature list is rather mundane. The same sort of gripes I have with the new MBP apply to the T420... Nice package, lacking in up to date tech and interfaces.

I want to see the replacement for the T410s. If they can get one of the new i7 cpus in there, I'd probably be able to accept the other missing features. Unless toshiba's R700 replacement has USB 3 and all the other latest and greatest interfaces along with the i7. Then I'd have to think really hard about which one to get. The T410s was harshly reviewed for short battery life, while my wife's R700 gets 5 hrs easily and had an i7 option, in roughly the same size package.

The 13" MBP is still very attractive, but I think the new interface standard is going to have to mature very rapidly to make up for the lack of USB 3.0, esata, etc. And that means intel will have to let other manufacturers use the standard sooner rather than later, which means more choices. The fact that the T420 lacks both USB 3.0 and the new interface is not a good sign. I've seen ads for the new interface popping up all over the internet in the last week though, so maybe other laptop manufacturers will be allowed to use it fairly soon.

that acer i3 i found in costco is advertised with USB 3, not that i care about it. don't care about thunderbolt either. after dealing with hp and dell support in the past i'll go apple any day if the price is similar. and i will never buy a laptop for more than $700 or so from hp or dell

dell is shipping 2011 Core i5's as well. you just have to buy the 3d enabled 17" XPS

So does the T420 have dedicated graphics or just Intel graphics only?

T420 should have dedicated graphics available as an option, if I read the site's preview info correctly. I expect that the low-end models will simply use the (much improved but still mediocre) integrated HD graphics on the cpu itself.

For many people, the improved integrated graphics will be fast enough. My personal "holy grail" is 3 monitors simultaneously, or 2 external monitors plus the laptop screen all running at the same time. After AMD launched eyefinity some time ago, I'm surprised that Intel and nvidia haven't gotten that working on laptops yet.
