When are HD movies going to be available?

I once saw a Chinese HD movie trailer and was blown back with the detail. Strands of hair, smoke, fluidity of movements, etc.

When are HD movies going to be out? Am I going to need a new optical drive?
 
As soon as all the standards for HD on optical media get straightened out. I guess it's between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Search around, I might be completely wrong 😛
