just wondering because it would be nice to backup all my data on basically 7 DVD disc instead of like having to backup to cd's.

3-5 years, I'm guessing.

it really depends. Just as soon as prices go down (obviously) and it's already not TOO high ~$500 for a decent one i guess. Once DVD's become more common, everything will be cheaper.

Probably around 7PM tomorrow. If not, then when OEM's start bundling them in their standard configurations.

DVD writers will be "common place" once they equal or at least rival today's high-speed CD-R capabilities.

DVD media prices will follow but definately not fall to prices equal to CD media for a good few years.

I think 3 years max. They don't cost all TOO much, so hopefully they don't take too long to hit the mainstream and the typical consumer.

just as with dvd players, dvd recorders will have a much faster acclerated start versus CD. Heck you can get a PC DVD-R drive for $450.
By XMas 2002 you'll find some bargain DVD writers for $200.

i dunno, dvdr seems kinda limited, the only thing it has going is the installed user base of drives:p i thought there were other optical tech in the works, like 150GB multilayered discs, those would hit the spot. dvdrs unless they are double sided double layered are still kinda small. curently only one sided one layer:(

Wow you read my mind. I am ordering my Pioneer DVR A03 tomorrow night! I can't wait to get it and try it out. I got some software to mess with already, but it kinda sucks. I guess I will have to save up more for better software :).

The industry is going to have to agree to standardize on a specification before any of that happens. there are still three competing ReWriteable DVD standards competing right now.

As soon as DVD+RW takes over the standards battle.
DVD-RAM = suck
DVD-RW = suck
DVD+RW = compatible with nearly every home player and can write above 1x.
