CNet has an Intel video showing a Core 2 Duo laptop lasting for more than 5 hours (he had to put the laptop away because the plane was landing) while the comparable Core Duo laptop dies at around 3 hours. Forget about the desktop version, when are we going to see the Laptops available?

Hopefully I'll be able to drop one into my dell e1405... unless Dell's bios won't let me, which is probable

On another note. Will they make the Merom available for the desktop, looks like its a chip that can be passively cooled. It would make an awsome HTPC.

On yet another note: there are some really good Dell deals on loaded E1405's and E1505's with Core Duo chips. So if you're looking for a family laptop or something and want to save a few bucks, it's a really good bet right now :) If you wait until merom ships, you'll have only a very short window where you can still get cheap Core Duos before they go out of stock and are replaced by undiscounted Meroms.

Merom?

That's soo funny because I remember a boy that had a cat named Merom. So what's the big deal? The cat had two tails. What a coincidence. :Q

Maybe it was your friend who came up with the Core 2 Duo.

Some guy on forum.notebookreview.com in the buy/sell forum is trying to unload a Dell laptop that he upgraded to a Core 2 Duo chip. He wants a pretty penny for it too.

The Merom is the next generation core-duo. There are already Centrino Duo machines for sale with Intel Core-Duo processors (T2300E).

I haven't been keeping up with all this new Intel stuff lately, so answer a question for me. Intel's first dual-core solution goes by the name Core Duo, and their new tech (which is supposed to be godly) goes by the name Core 2 Duo? Is that right?

Why would they need to do that, when it's the exact same architecture as Conroe? The desktop boards they made for core duo(Yonah) should support it with a bios upgrade however, such as that overpriced $300 Aopen board.

Core duo is the dual core 65nm version of Banias and Dothan(pentium-m) designed for laptops. The first intel dual cores were the Pentium-D's, which are the 2 prescott(90nm pentium-4) die slapped together, and the 65nm version, 2 cedar mill(65nm Pentium-4) die slapped together. Core 2 duo is the new architecture, being used for laptop(merom), desktop(conroe), and server(woodcrest).

too bad the GPU is not upgradeable :(. what will limit my e1505 in the future (and even now) is not the Core Duo 1.83 GHz, but the 256MB ATI Mobility X1400 and 1680x1050 native resolution - as far as games are concerned, anyway.

oh well, I guess that's why I have my P4 2.8 Northwood and 6600GT ;)
