In reality it doesn't rain that much more than elsewhere. It's relatively safe, cost of living is good, taxes low, insurance is a little higher, but due to property values being higher it's understandable.

This is for West Palm Beach...Ft Lauderdale and Miami get more crime, cheaper to live (there are still million to multi million dollar homes in ft lauderdale and miami though), etc....

holy link job!!

I'm in South Florida (West Palm) but I've lived in Boca and Coral Springs too. I really don't think of it as the best place to live. Be really careful out there. There's tons of crime in areas like West Palm's downtown, Ft. Lauderdale, and even more in Miami. Watch out for scammers. Tons of companies are dishonest. For example, you may get calls claining you've won prize xyz and all you need to do is have this water quality person come over. The inspection person will most likely deliberately use tests to show you how bad your water is to push their overpriced filtering stuff on you. Other inspection companies may deliberately damage something to have you pay to fix it.

The entire social structure is wack. Many poor people in really high-crime areas. Then people from many of the more affluent areas (ahem, Boca) don't seem to have positive traits that match their income. Lots of stuck up, snobby people, there's rumors of mafia activity, etc. Many people drive recklessly, especially farther south in South Florida.

It may not be your favorite place to live--it's not mine--but do be very careful, especially as you're two counties south of me. From living in 3 cities in the area, I think it's generally more tolerable farther north and more messed-up farther south.

Where else have you lived? These type of scams happen in all states. Poor people in high crime areas? jesus, who would have known....I think if you venture out of Florida you possibly may see this trend elsewhere...perhaps it's a stretch I guess 😉. Mafia? Snobs? This is the way America is all over, been to New York? CA esp the trendy parts of L.A.? The New England area?

Coral Springs and Boca both are known 'snob' areas. There is a popular expression 'She's so Boca!' ... I wonder why?

Florida is a top retirement location for a reason. Being a crappy place to live is not one of them.

Personally i love living in Florida....

I've lived in Coral Springs (visiting my parents here right now), Gainesville, and Sarasota (where i currently live). All three places i've really never had any issues with. There sure is a hell of alot more to do on the east coast then the west coast of fl. Although, its much more laid back and the beaches are much nicer on the gulf coast...

I'll prolly stay in sarasota for another 3-4 years (once i finish law school) and then move back to the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area...

Me and a friend of mine are moving down there. He lives in Seattle now and I live in St. Paul MN. Anyway, it is too cold here and I have lived here all my life and he is beginning to hate seattle so we decided to pack it up. He got a grant at the university of miami and I will have to chill for a year before transferring my credits and getting in state tuition. We will be living about 1-2 miles from campus. I am a bit nervous but whats the point of livin if you don't take a few chances here and there. Any advice from people who have moved long distances or people that live down there?

The best way to move a whole hell of a lot of stuff, call budget and rent a 25 foot box truck. Cheap, and easy. Dad drove one by himself MI to AZ in 2 1/2 days 6 hours of sleep total, rest driving.

it's gonna be expensive in teh gables area try moving west and avoid kendall the fiu area is cheaper. their will be lots of traffic, make sure your AC doesn't stop working over the summer, and gas is at 2.05 cheapest. I travel this area two or three times a week and i dread it every single time. Just cuz your 10 min from downtown doesn't mean you'll want to go there or will get there in 10min, if you got questions just PM and i'll answer them

I've also happened to have lived in Shanghai, Edmonton, Ottawa, Raleigh-Durham, and San Diego. No really, I've lived in lots of places so I have a means for comparison 😉 It's quite a bit worse in South Florida than elsehwere. The people in North County San Diego and in the Triangle are for the most part really good people. High tech areas where the income actually shows up in peoples' positive personality traits. The only company that wanted to pull evil stuff on us in San Diego was our landlord. In Florida it's been the water testing people, the landlord, the dentist, the insurance...on and on...

In Coral Springs, I remember attending the flagship middle school of Broward County, Sawgrass Springs MS. It was an environmental magnet that had higher than average performance stats, but despite that, many of the students really weren't cool people. Tons of people trying to cut in line, beg or steal food from complete strangers, etc. One fool even stole the TI-83 that the school lent me :Q It's nowhere near like that when I was in middle school in Cary, NC or in high school in San Diego. At the county's flagship public school too...

buy an umbrella.

I was in Florida for 2 weeks last August (or maybe the year before... i can't remember), and it rained the whole time. Even when it was sunny and warm, it would be pouring rain. It was even worse than in Portalnd, OR. I was told that summer was their rainy season, though.

You're killing me. 🙁 I miss my old home town of Springs. I don't miss the traffic and wanna be thugs, though. 🙂 There were plenty of each.

Oh god, half of the people in this thread don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Unless you live in a big city, which you are, Florida royally blows. Then again, I like the big cities, and you like nature, so you should fit in fine. Other than the fact that we have skanky underage hoes and bitches at the beach, no state income tax, the highest amount of cubans outside of cuba, and a low cost of living, I don't see why people love this fair state.

Are thong bikinis still BANNED down there? 🙁

I guess old folks were dropping dead from all the excitement?

BTW: I didn't like it down there. Too FLAT, to HOT, too Humid.

I hope you LOVE bugs too, they got BIGGUNS down there! 😉

perhaps you are blind I don't know...this happens everywhere though.

Chances are the poor kids in Coral Springs did not come from Coral Springs. Comparing stealing food vs a TI-83 is like night and day as well.

It seems every school down here in S. Florida is deemed the 'flagship', 'model', or 'leading' school.

skanky? what beach? You do realize some of the hottest video shoots are on beaches in Florida.

Are you racist? I don't see what a lot of cubans have to do with anything....same can be said of texas/california with mexicans.

Florida has a lot to do, it's one of the biggest vacation spots there is....perhaps you need more money to enjoy it fully but that's the way a lot of things go. I was on the boat all day, really thought about making the 2 hour run to the bahamas, it was like glass out there. Then you have the late afternoon parties back at the marina....yeah, it's a really lame time down here.

Thongs were only banned as far as I know for food vendors. It was the Hot dog ladies that were pissing off less complete women.
