Wheel of Time book #10

Sweet, I knew there was a new one coming out this fall, but I didn't know the title. Thanks! Aren't there still at least two books left? Robert Jordan seems to be dragging it out just a bit, although I admit there is a heck of a lot of loose ends to tie up. This one is only 672 pages? That sucks, the first ones were 800-1,000 pages.

At the current rate, I'm guessing he'll take up at least 5 more books to finish it.

I wouldn't mind, except he takes too long to finish them. Book 9 came out late 2000, book 10 should have been no more than a year apart.

We met him at a local sci-fi convention.... he was very elusive about the end of the series.... and he seems to be taking his time finishing it... Arg...

Elusive indeed. I saw a WoT site that was selling T shirts and other junk with RAFO on them. Took me a few to figure out it is Jordan's oft repeated "read and find out".

maybe he discovered how to skip the boring parts?

I used to read WoT, but then I felt he was dragging it out way too much. He has to start writing more Conan books to get back to the basics. Hopefully that 670 page book won't include the normally 300 pages of boring/repetitive parts I would skip.

man I thought I'd have to wait till 2003 for this so I started the series over again. I gotta get reading so I'm done by November!
Same thing happened to me last time when Winter's Heart came out.

Oh and I hate the damn binding for these things...my Eye of the World lost its cover after one year and now its in two pieces. What a piece of crap...just their way of making you buy hardback at 3 times the price.

I thought I heard somewhere that he was going to do 13 books in the series (the number 13 does have some significance in the novels themselves). I could be mistaken, though.

Wheel of Time was good until the women became frigid feminists. Also Jordan drives me nuts with descriptions about clothes.

"Mat, wearing a purple coat with green strips. Matched with orange pants and a red cloak. Underneath his tunic looked dirty as if he had been sleeping in it, and the yellow had faded to a dirty white. His boots looked worn and his underpants had a few stains on them....and they don't look like skid marks. Most likely because the women characters wouldn't know sex if it came up and penetrated them"

They drive me crazy. Every chapter he does it.

Well I've only done it once...I wasn't planning on this time but I originally heard I'd have to wait till 2003 so I started over again.

Looks like Mat is featured prominently on the cover, so there will probably be a major plotline for him in this one.
BTW, does anyone else think the cover art on these books sucks? Specifically, the cover of Lord of Chaos makes it look like a cheesy romance novel.

I thought it was a cheesy romance novel? At least that's the direction it seems to be going. Especially with that nasty love triangle with Rand and his three love slaves 😀

I love Jordan's descriptive style!

What I am worried about is that I just finished reading all nine books in the last couple months... right now all the names, places, and events are fresh in my mind... (I thought
the series ended at book 9 when I started). I will probably get a lot of reading between now and Nov... hopefully I will still get the same enjoyment out of the new one.

btw, who is your favorite character? I personally like Perrin the best becase I probably identify with him the most...

Here's my take on the WoT series:

RJ has stated he will not completely wrap up the series when the final book (somewhere around 12 or 13) is published. He claims he wants the series to have 'a life of it's own, to be remembered long after the final page is turned'. Most of the major things will be wrapped up ie Siege of Tar valon, Cleansing of Saidin, Tar'mon Gaidan etc.

Crossroads is apparently supposed to focus on the Siege, with Perrin's chase of Faile factored in somewhere. Mat is supposed to marry Tuon, and leash the Seanchan to Rand, or at least lead them (why else would he have all those battle lords memories???)

Shiva: they recently released a new edition of Eye of the World, in two seperate Paperbacks with new cover-art. More for the hardcore collector then anything, but definitely worth a glance for the bookshelves. Chapter.indigo.ca has the book ready for pre-order (for us Canucks anyways), with publishing Date mid-November.

Jordan is apparently also toying with the idea of letting other writers into WoT after wrapping up the Wheel. he wants to be able to totally walk away from the series, yet have it have a life of it's own.

so RJ wants to go the Star Wars route and have millions of novels with different story lines with conflicting plots and bad writers thrown in among the good ones. Thats just great 😛

As long as he ends Tarmon Gai'dan I'll be happy. But after being hyped for 10 novels its going to be a letdown no matter what.

bad idea IMO.

Personally, I love Song of Ice and Fire waaaay more than WoT, but WoT is still good, though not great.

another good author is Raymond Feist...he's not as well known, but he's one of the best fantasy writers IMO.

Book 9 Spoilers!

I'm a Feist fan too. As for WoT, it's really pissing me off how it's so slow. I get to the end of a book and I'm like, "wow, so I just read 600+ pages and got the same amount of info I could have had in 150. I'm not looking for non-stop action, but come on, what really happened in Book 9? Saidin got cleansed, Elayne putzed around in Caemlyn, Rand and friends putzed around in Far Madding, Mat putzed around in Ebou Dar, and Perrin putzed around in the woods for a few hours. I feel like I Jordan rambled for 620 pages and then figured that maybe something should actually happen in the book so he just threw in a final 30 of Saidin getting cleansed as an afterthought.

Your fave is the same as mine, hence my handle 'Goldeneyes' at the Theoryland.com board. I can relate to Rand in several ways, but Perrin's outlook on life is very similar to my own. He fights for what he loves, if he must, even as he thinks it's a great dream (that the Tinkers have) to shun violence completely. That dream won't make it anywhere in the world today (RL or WoT), but maybe someday... *shrug*

As for length, Jordan is milking this series for all it's worth! I have no desire to read through useless details like the origin of the wood that was used to create Lord Agelmar's table! And yet, as a fantasy lover, I must continue on. I still enjoy it. 🙂

Deslocke: What if RJ dies? Maybe TOR books will ask the Tleilaxu to grow a ghola in their axlotl tanks (Dune reference)
