I am in the market for a new one ... looked at a few Columbia jackets, but the inner fleece makes me a friggin electrical pole, it's so staticy.

What do you all use? I am thinking $100-$200 for a new one. My snowboarding jacket is to thin (shell) for work, so I got to find one!

I paid $40 for a Piperline snowboard jacket from sierra trading post... Although my Columbia jacket meant for rain actually kept me well in temperatures below freezing...

Patagucci aka patagonia R 2 fleece. OP, look for the Pataggucci jackets, they're well made, you can get a good one for $200.

a heavy wool, dark gray trench coat that I picked up on ebay.

supposedly it's from Switzerland and indeed, the only marking on it is a red stamp that says Valais, but really, who knows. it's pretty high quality, though, and I only paid $30 for it.

edit: googled it and it might be legit... my coat looks exactly like this one:

I got me this one. Says it's good for -30, so I'm looking forward to being able to wear a t-shirt underneath and still be warm this winter. :D

Also, I picked it up for $120 which seemed very reasonable.

Op, get a western mountaineering down jacket, their flight jacket for $275, and a hardshell.

In winter, it's the layering system of clothes that will keep you warm.

Arizona insulated faux leather jacket with (cotton) hood. Looks decent, and it was on sale for $25ish at JC Penny.

You can't go wrong with wool. It'll absorb 80% of it's weight in water, and still keep you warm. Screw all "high tech" materials that have come out over the years. The only thing they have is reduced bulk and weight. Otherwise, classic fibers are superior in every way.

North Face Denali. This is my 3rd year with it, and I would say it was absolutley worth the relatively high price.

Btw, you might want to look into a layered solution. It's more customizable than 1 heavy jacket. Tshirt+long sleeved shirt+sweater+vest+jacket is better than a heavy jacket.

How close fitting is the shell? My standard for really cold stuff is a thin primaloft insulating layer with a waterproof shell. Incredibly warm.

I have a few: The standard wool business type overcoat. A composite winter coat I got from LL Bean a few years ago. But my favorite when it's really cold/nasty is still one of the old school US Navy officer's greatcoats (pre Vietnam era) - These are incredibly thick and wonderfully warm. They're very hard to find now, though. Anything new won't be half as thick.

I usually wear a starter hoodie. I'm comfortable down to about 15-20 deg F with it.
When it gets colder, I've got a leather jacket with a hood that does the trick...

On those few days when it's like -25 with 50mph winds, then I wear both of them... I have an old ski jacket too, which is handy for snowmobiling, as it blocks the wind and is a bit lighter than the leather jacket...

I have a Calvin Klein jacket for when it gets really cold. I had to buy it in Korea because of a soju incident. I was wearing two jackets, and I ended up puking between them and they didn't have time to dry after washing them.

A Vitesse ski jacket. Ultra light, super wind proof and super warm even in sub 20 degree weather. Can be worn in 55 or 10 degrees. If I didn't have that something similar from North Face.

I have had that jacket for 15 years and I doubt I'll ever love a jacket as much as that one.

My winter coat is a North Face coat with 3 layers (removable). I rarely rare it though. I prefer a fleece instead....I don't get that cold easily.

I have a black wool pea coat I bought on clearance last spring for like $60. I usually wear something underneath it as a liner to keep me warm on those ultra-cold days. Either a sweater or a polarfleece jacket.
