I like my wool coat from Banana Republic from a few years ago. Wool and cashmere. Really warm.

I've noticed that BR has gone downhill with the materials they use now. It's not as thick and combines cheaper materials like nylon instead of cashmere. Also more expensive.

Which one I wear depends on how long I plan to be outside & what I'm doing. Just heading to work, shopping trips, etc., I wear a thinner light weight jacket. If I'm going to be outside for a few hours, I wear my ski jacket (Columbia? I can't remember what brand). If I'm going to be working outside, then one of my Carhart jackets.

I wear a black patagonia wind breaker/fleece jacket. It's awesome. Hasserved me well throughout the last couple of winters in tennessee and a week each winter spent in durango, colorado. But it's also light enough to serve as a good light jacket as well.

My idea of a "jacket" is a long sleeve shirt, and it has to be below freezing for me to even consider that. I'm always really hot, and also hate coats especially in the car.

I've been disappointed in my Columbia outdoor gear. It just doesn't hold a candle to North Face in terms of wind/water proofness and overall lightweight warmth. It's generally been my experience that you get what you pay for in trying to stay warm/dry. A really nice jacket is very light weight, breathes incredibly well so you're not burning up in 45 degrees, can stand up to 25+ mph winds and absolutely positively will keep you dry - aka, a really nice ski jacket.

I suggest a jacket with removable liner + external shell. So it serves a multipurpose use during the 4 season out in MN. I have a north face jacket.. dont recall the make/model but it was purchased at dicks sporting goods.

I would look into REI / Dicks / Cabelas or somewhere similar. REI is having a sale currently.link

My winter wear is primarily Carhartt.

I have one of These:
http://www.carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=32126&langId=-1&categoryId=10928
That was issued by the company I worked for...an "end of the job" gift.

Plus, I have one of these:
http://www.carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=32106&langId=-1&categoryId=10927
For when it gets REALLY cold. :p

Of course, for when I worked outside, I also have Carhartt coveralls and bib overalls...but they almost never get worn here.

A denim jacket over a hooded sweatshirt until it gets to be consistently below 30; then a bulky Carolina jacket.

Depends:

For general use - TNF Mountain Lite jacket and Denali Fleece jacket underneath
Going out - J Crew Wool Pea coat
Outdoor work - LL Bean Barn coat

I use a Columbia 3 in 1. I haven't had too much problems with it. They are heavier and aren't as nice as some of the other ones out there but the one I got was like half the price. It's plenty for what I need.

I am in the market for a new one ... looked at a few Columbia jackets, but the inner fleece makes me a friggin electrical pole, it's so staticy.

What do you all use? I am thinking $100-$200 for a new one. My snowboarding jacket is to thin (shell) for work, so I got to find one!
I have a Columbia jacket and I love it. hmm nevermind i don't see the one i have on their website.

One wash with fabric softener and it won't have any static electricity anymore.

why not just use a nice pull-over fleece under your shell? still too staticy?

you could always try to ground yourself ~30 minutes or so. :hmm:

that's what I use (fleece + Patagonia ski shell). Of course, that's a rare need here...

when I was in Chicago, though, it was ~2 layers, then a nice down jacket, scarf, gloves (maybe 2 pair), toboggan, etc....
