Do you also get offended when you see blacks at an affirmative action rally. If you don't than your a hypocrit or a racist. Both are just instances of demonstrations of racial pride.

racial pride I understand, hate I dont.

It (the flag) is not about hate though.

Just ignore it.

Noted. Thanks for all the input guys, just had to understand what the confederate flag entailed since alot of times it seemed to be only negative things.

Yeah, the Civil War was fought over States rights, not salvery. Slavery just happened to be the issue the Union states were wanting to force the Confederate states to abolish. It could have been a Gas tax, it really wouldn't have mattered, the reason the war was fought was because the Confederates states didn't want to let the Federal Governemnt tell them what to do all the time. So while I wouldn't display a conferderate flag myself, I can see the sentiment from that point of view. But it just depends on the individual as to which meaning from that flag they are trying to evoke out of people. Alot of times the know it is going to piss off people and that is the real reason they display it.

It's their right to put it on their car/truck/'possum with gunrack; it's my right to think that it makes them look like idiot hicks. No need for things to actually get unpleasant.

why does it offend you?

because they are rednecks?

well, from my perspective I've always thought that the stars and bars were a symbol of racism. Is it not?

no its not... it is the flag of the confederate states of america.. there were more issues going on during the civil war than just slavery..

ahh good luck trying to explain this. History has been whashed to the point kids think that the Civil War was about slavery.

Just watch out for the revisionist historians that say slavery played no part whatsoever in it.

Oh it played a part. small part. but a part none the less. But it was not such a large part that many (mainly younger) people think. heck my sister-in-law (13 and very smart) thinks that the norht started the CW to free the blacks. why? because that is what she is taught from the history books.

I'd give it more credit than that. The issue was immensely destructive to the political system and caused great emnity between members of congress which only helped the war along.

The war was ultimately about power, the south was losing it both politically and economically. When it became clear that the northern sates would finally hold the advantage in both areas after a century of southern control they wern't too pleased.

My view on this issue is that it's a non issue.

Kids will be kids and rednecks will be rednecks. Some will grow up and some will out grow it. Some will not.

When I see confederate flags on pickups, my first immediate thought is "redneck". But after that, I don't really care.

most rednecks are good people

I agree... not saying that there aren't any. But like any group of people, there are some pricks that bring down the group's standing.

Whenever I see a confederate flag on a car I do a couple circles around it with my keys out.

Why is everyone getting on his case about what he said? He could just be trying to open the door because he thinks its his own car 😀

So I went home for lunch today. When leaving the house I noticed this old school beat up truck with a confederate flag on the windshield. I also saw the 2 guys getting in. They both look like typical highschool teens, one maybe being kinda rocker/punkish. How do you view these things? Sometimes it kinda offends me... but thats just me...

Lets keep this on topic and no race bashing please.

How do I feel? I really don't think they should be allowed to drive. How old are they? They will probably cause a wreck or something.

Other than that...I'm totally and deeply offended at seeing two people get into a truck. That bothers me.

Or Cops

What we need to do is make "Stars and Bars" stickers since that was the real Confederate flag. No one would know what the hell it is and therefore could not work themselves up into a fit of offense.

I agree with this on the basis of reason, and I also admire posters such as miri who advocate tolerance. But since this comes up in local news so very much I cannot ignore that it remains a volatile and divisive issue. My personal view will not be popular, but here goes.

Though accute ethnic hatred was never representative of the confederacy, because of the unfortunate adoption of it's symbols by a small group of vocal zealots my sympathy favors the victims of racism over the sentiments of tradition. I think the single best analogy for my feelings comes from the relatively recent "war" in Kosovo.

While I assent that symbols of Serbian unity can have represented many honorable things, my feelings bow to the victims of "ethnic cleansing" and their survivors, and former symbols will be forever tainted with that. I find myself imagining those people, and how absurd it would be to ask of them to tolerate those symbols in public.

I know that it's by no means fair to associate a war of genocide with the confederacy, although the tolerance of human slavery was detestable to me. I wish that there were a way to honor the old culture and it's symbols, but at present those who are most vocal about the old flag are not those who I would wish to be identified with.
