My hand positioning and movement is adapted to my specific language syntax and usage tendencies. It's approximately 75% faster than home row for me, and a metric shitload more efficient. My keyboarding teacher bitched at me for the first day or two for "doing it wrong", and then we got around to the "starting point" benchmark - when I beat her by over 100WPM, she shut up fast.

I usually use the homerow keys and never have to look. Even if I'm typing and using my mouse at the same time I don't have to look I have a good sense of where things are blind.

I sometimes irritate the hell out of my wife by looking at *her* when she is talking to me (frequently turning completely around to do so - her PC is on the opposite wall) and continuing to type in some thread on some forum.

So, she can SEE the monitor, and SEE that I'm actually typing without missing any characters or whatever - all the while *looking* at her talking.

"Honey, but I *am* looking at you when you are talking to me, what's the problem?"

I kind of mix it up. Somet looking at the keys, some loooking at the screen. Mostly looking at the screen now though. What I hate is when I got to fix people's computers at work (I do Desktop support), and they have those natural keyboards. I can't type on those damn things. I look like a moron trying to type, because I constantly have to backspace.

There are varying levels of typing profeciency. I know some of my friends have to look down every once in awhile to take a quick peek but most of the time they can type pretty well by themselves. And as far as all the symbols and numbers, i dont have their exact positions down so i have to look down every so often. But these are usually the more rare keys that i normally dont use.

Mostly looking at the keyboard.

Looking at the screen looks like this: hi9 eberuy nofyu.

Same here, I type very fast, but I never bothered to learn touch typing.

I just use two fingers and peck away, but I don't need to look at the keyboard. I usually do because it does help, but I can type looking at the screen. I can also type pretty darn fast for being a "hunt and peck" type guy. I can't copy text very quickly but if I'm just writing from my head I can do like 70wpm.

I'm pretty good with typing without looking at the screen. Most of my typing is with 2 fingers, apart from things like Shift, Enter and Backspace which I do with my pinky.

I get about 70-75wpm with this technique, and am faster than most of the people I know, my mum who has been touch-typing for over 30 years gets about 80-90wpm, so I'm not that far behind her.

I took typing class in HS and I think it was one of the most useful classes I ever had. I type around 70 wpm without looking. I only look when I have to type the numbers.

Edit: I type by using all 10 fingers as you suppose to... :)

I do that too. I'll be typing and be looking at someone and talking to them and I usually don't miss any letters. It does slow me down sometimes though. And sometimes I get confused when typing (only recently though) and my brain moves faster than my hands and I mix up letters and sometimes words.

I tend to use my left hand much more than I use my right hand. My left covers about 60% of the keyboard and my right uses the rest and the spacebar. I'm left handed, but use the mouse on the right side of the keyboard. I don't know if that has anything to do with it though.

Oh, and those natural keyboards are terrible for me.
