The Killer NIC is the biggest piece of junk I've ever seen. It's expensive as fsck to boot. The phys X card is only slightly less worthless since it actually boosts performance albeit in only a few games. Both IMO are a huge waste of money that could go towards better things. At this point better things could be anything from better cooling to a printer/keyboard/mouse because those things would be more worthwhile. Also you wouldn't seem like a n00b that just wants to throw the most expensive of everything into a box and call it fast.

Toss the killer NIC. Keep the physx card. GRAW 2 for example will have a map for physx cards owners. More games will at least be able to utilize it, although one might add that with a qaudcore it might be useless anyways :p

Well, so I reiterate... You have both, which one offers the better value/utility in your experience? Obviously, the rest of us on AT that don't have this stuff have no clue. Do you see or notice a benefit with either?

id go with the killer nic if it really does affect your multiplayer lag. it will help you be more competitive but the physx will just make your game look better, which could actually be detrimental to your game. a lot of pro gamers turn all of the settings down, partly so they dont have smoke and stuff in the way so they can see their enemies better. my understanding is that physx just adds more smoke and more detailed explosions etc, and that would just get in the way for online competitive play.

also uh...you want to put one of those 2 cards in, which many people consider useless, but you aren't going to put your second 8800gtx in for sli? are you crazy?

I think this thread is more of a geek penis waving thread than anything. Look at me, I have 2 useless niche cards for free. If his job lets him have these for free he better damn well know which on is better. The Killer NIC only kills your wallet in the real world. I can't see how it can give you an appreciable benefit for gaming as it can't speed up the telco or receiving server.

if I could have one for free, I would definetely take the physx card. at least that can be put to use in *some* games, while the killer nic is just completely useless. and in those games that the physx does work, it works wonders. just look at the graw 2 video on youtube. you aint seen physics like that before.

You can say that a few more times... I would sell them both on to the next sucker out there.

Both are complete wastes of money. The Killer NIC is essentially a caching hardware router. You can do the same thing with cheaper network gear and a good NIC on the motherboard. As others have said, it is a minimal CPU savings with no real network boosting that a good router would not give you in the first place.

As for the PhysX card, ummm, you really pulled in hook, line and sinker on that one. Maybe in 3-4 years this will be a more common type of device, but right now, it is just is a pointless hardware device. While it might be cool, since only 1 or 2 games even can use it, and even then, they use it in a horrible way (resulting in less then 30 FPS), it is a pointless device.

Sell both cards, put your own watercooling kit together, and overclock your system.

-or-

Keep the cards, but PM me your firm's HR number.

some good points (too much junk and smoke) thanks - for myself at home, no games I can use at 1600x1200 that SLi does anything more really than make noise... really after playing around with Lost Planet, can see really the 2900 or 8800 is going to be something worth while (if you turn on all the eye candy) - so again no SLi benefit.

be honest, killer nic gets bit of bad rap, if you have one, use it and play for long periods of time non-stop, you know what I mean... on the other hand, its buggy at times, PhysX, yep does add eye candy in few games, and no nothing to do with making things faster - just look better...

...my thoughts on PhysX, DX10 going to address things the same way? Could be it off loads it on less sensible GPU clocks or muilt-cores..

So to hit few topics (posts) at once here too - nope, not a matter of knowing which is better (one could make a debate for either - my job would be to simply know the facts of what each can do, not the crap or paid review etc...), really like to see some good thoughts just like this post - maybe something (like this) I have not thought of for myself... much different working with systems, and ones own...

as far as not understanding how the killer can do anything (useful), well, I'm not the right person to ask, does it, as I can see, sure, some, smooths out when things get very busy, just seems the game flows bit better, fear, ok, first I suck at playing games, helps be get the first shot most times... so, ya it works, why, don't know, don't really care.

Games using PhysX, patches seem to be coming more and more - all I can say, can you see the difference, I think yes, when your playing the game do you see things looking better, I don't, just me, however I know it works if you play the game just to watch for the effects...

Thinking of passing on keeping both cards actually, use the teamed NIC on my Asus Striker board and look to the next toy...

why do you have a killer NIC? I guess you ran out of stuff to buy, let me guess... 30" monitor?

ended up building 2nd system with AMD 6000+ and Asus Crosshair MB - using both PhsX and Killer Nic in that system as it had 3 usable PCI slots yet even after the 8800GTX taking up 2 slots... sorry
