what's your thermostat set to in your house/apartment?

65, and thats the now norm with higher electric and gas costs. My electric for my huge house is a whopping $85 and my gas is a COUGH $180. Man I long for the days when I used to see my parents gas and electric bills, gas was like $15 and electric was $45 and we always left everything on and was bitched at all the time to keep the sh!t off. Now the stuff is off, I go around all the time and make sure it is, and the stuff is crazy high considering nothing is left on. GOD if it was like I was a kid I would hate to see the bill then 😱

Hah, that sounds awfully familiar. Left alone, it ranges from 68F to somewhere around 85-90F in this apartment.* There is ONE thermostat, and it is in the livingroom. The bedrooms lack thermostats. But back to the livingroom - it is always cold out there, and if you open the door, a blast of cold air hits the ancient thermostat, which relies on a bimetallic coiled strip and a mercury tilt switch. Once the mercury flows to one side, its weight keeps that end held down longer than it should be. So that keeps the heat on longer than it needs to be. Not only that, but the vents in the livingroom are tiny, and they're right under the big front window. The curtain there catches some of the air, and directs it against the cold window.
Result of all this: the thermostat turns on the heat, thinking it's cold. The livingroom stays cold while the bedrooms heat up to nearly 90 degrees (seriously).

* That was at the start of the semester. We've finally found a "sweet spot" where the thermostat can be set to such that the mercury is always just barely teetering on the edge of flopping to one side or the other. The guys in the other room weight down a sheet of cardboard over their vent so that the heat doesn't go into their room. Instead, it goes into the rest of the apartment, including my room. I can stand it up to about 80F, but 77F is the perfect temperature for me in winter. Sometimes I've got to open the window to let some of the excess heat out.
These apartments are about 20-30 years old, and it shows.
 
i have no thermostat. i rent a place thats heated with radiators, and rent includes gas and water

i just know this: if its slightly chilly in the apartment, its 35-55 outside
if its warm in the apartment: outdoors its below-freezing
 
Houston, TX 70F in the winter, 76-78 in the summer
Since its been cold for here the heater turned on a few times this week, but we always get really small electric bills in the winter (~150). The house is 3200 Sq Ft
 
60F, but I use a space heater

Gas and electric come from the same company and was around $170 last month. It will probably be a lot higher this month though (last year it peaked at around $450).
 
65 when at home, 60 when not at home/at night

i pile on 2 t-shirts + sweater and extra thick socks so i dont have to raise the temp
 
My apartment is on central heat and I have ZERO control over temp. I'd guess average temperature is 75-78 while it's around 0 outside this time of year. I sleep with the window WIDE open every night.
 
I leave it around ~70 when I'm at home, and ~65 when I'm not. It's starting to warm up here in Baton Rouge, though; I actually had to use my A/C the other day.
