One place I worked named them after the Seven Dwarves. Another place named them after the characters from M*A*S*H. Here, we just have a server. For my network at home, I named the server after my cat.

Most of the windows servers here are named after counties in California. The Mac servers are named after greek gods.

in my lab they name it after birds. Peacock, puffin, buzzard, etc. When I come on board I added two machines, gentoo and penguin. :)

At home, I name them after girl names that I like. Jenny, Athena, buffy ...

I usually use an appropriate term for my servers. For instance, my firewall is called mother -- because it watches over my network and doesn't like it when bad people try to harm her children. My workstation is called hemoglobin, because it's my life's blood. When I wiped my bsd workstation, I named it kerri b4 I gave it away cuz I loved it to death, but isn't near me anymore. My RIP server is called payoff cuz it spits out paper that is of monetary value. There's more, but it's a long list.

Functional names. They don't always coincide with the "Public" DNS names.

Examples. Portal1, Print1, Apache1, NMAP1, NMAP2, POP1, (2-node Cluster)Data1, Data2 - Cluster object=Datastore

used to be in my old comp

south park caracters for corporate servers (kenny, chef, cartmann)
fish names for app servers: orca, dolphin, barracuda
cat names for web servers: tiger, lion, jaguar etc...

pretty cool no?

now we have more organized names in new company as we managed so many clients

type:
two first letters of company+MS (for mail server)
two first letters of company+FS (for file server)
two first letters of company+SS (for SQL server)

for instance FFMS
and FFFS
and FFSS

this is one of our clients..
all of them are structured the same way
so it's easier to administer

1st Home Servers = Seame Street Characters.

2nd Home Servers = StarCraft Characters.

Work Servers = System Type/Use/location mixed into a single type: 2KNotesB216 etc. 2k being WIN2k, Notes being a Domino Server, and B216 being office/building.

next two pool

HKNG-CTRX-01

Hong Kong Citrix server 1

With hundreds of servers you HAVE to have some organization.
