This summer has been pretty lame for me this year.

We've yet to do any of the following:

1. Float any rivers
2. Go Jeeping
3. Fishing
4. Watch the Texas Rangers

So right now I'm pretty much ready for winter to get here. This 100+ degree heat can GTFO.

I got married and went on my honeymoon to Jamaica last week... Apart from that, a family beach trip in August and a LAN party Labor Day weekend. And lots and lots of work, as per usual.

I'll probably make an effort to make it to more local food festivals / beer festivals as well. Those are always good for a laugh and a stomachache.

Taking the train to Portland in early August, then going to Toronto and New York in early September. That's the only major stuff.

What are you doing in Portland?

Drinking beer. What else? :awe:

Heading down with my ex-Father in law to try out beers and cruise bookstores and whatnot. Any recommendations?

As far as bookstores, you're going to Powell's City of Books. You'll probably do others, but if you skip Powell's, you're insane.

As far as beer goes... Where to start? The Rogue brewpub in the Pearl is a great place, excellent beer, only a couple blocks from Powell's. Deschutes also has a brewpub in the same area; you could hit up one, go to Powell's, come out several hours later in a daze and go to the other. Henry's Tavern is also within spitting distance of Powell's and it has everything under the sun, but it's a lot pricier for some inexplicable reason. More upscale, less Portland-y.

You have to try a McMenamin's while you're in town. They're everywhere and they're all similar but unique. If you're staying downtown, you might be looking around the 21st/23rd area, Blue Moon, Ram's Head, Mission Theater, Crystal Ballroom, etc. I find those to have less personality than some of the other properties. I'd recommend Kennedy School, personally. A bit of a trek from downtown, but it's a converted elementary school with a number of different bars on the premises, along with restaurants and a theater. The architecture in the Boiler Room pub is worth it alone. Ruby and Terminator are two favorites; a Rubinator combines them and identifies you as a local (and it's damn delicious to boot, try it).

There are really too many brewpubs in town; Widmer Gasthaus, Laurelwood, Hopworks Urban Brewery, Lucky Lab, Hair of the Dog, Burnside Brewing, Bridgeport, MacTarnahan's/Pyramid, Alameda, Amnesia, etc. And basically every restaurant has a wide variety of local beers regardless. You can't really go wrong.

Awesome, thanks man. That school sounds fantastic.

So any other specific beer recommendations that need to be tried while down there? We can get a lot of stuff up here, but I know there are probably quite a few that never make it all the way up North.

Working. Really miss summer vacation from school, haha.

Finishing up my Micro Home Theater concept in the basement (200 sq foot "Home Theater for 2" with sub-sonic & regular subwoofers, plus tranducers in the loveseat, with a high-contrast LED projector & a custom-made mirrored screen & special 3" full-range drivers optimized for vocals in a surround-sound setup).

Hopefully hitting up Boston or NYC next week to see BTTF in theaters!

I'd stick with seasonals and one-offs. Ask what the specials are. Oregon beer, especially from the larger breweries, gets exported everywhere, so you probably won't have much trouble finding Rogue's Dead Guy or Deschutes Black Butte Porter. But you might not get their seasonals. If you go to the smaller brewpubs (Laurelwood, Lucky Lab, Amnesia, HUB and the like) there's a good chance you won't find any of their offerings available near you. Personally, I prefer Deschutes and Rogue regardless. Also, if you go to the Rogue brewpub, get a beer float with their Hazelnut Brown Nectar (or Chocolate Stout, I suppose); it's to die for.

And McMenamin's is notoriously hard to find outside of their brewpubs, so I'd try everything you're interested in while you're there. I think they still do beer sampler platters that let you taste 6 different brews; a good way to get the experience without getting plastered. Come to think of it, most of the brewpubs offer flights or taster boards, so you should probably do that, just to experience as much as possible.
