What's your passion, and are you doing it as your job?

So many people advise doing something that you're passionate about. So what are you passionate about and have you been getting paid to do it? If not, how do you plan on going about doing it?

I would have to say that my passion is product design mostly centered around consumer electronics. I want to be in a position to help devise, design, and call the final shots on what goes into a final product. So a designer/innovator/inventor/final shot caller type. And I have no idea how I'll do such a thing. But I could be truly happy seeing something on the market and knowing that I designed that with my own two hands.

I don't know why I am not doing what I am passionate about... guess I am afraid to really try.
Maybe I will stop being so afraid and do it.

Passion: Beer drinking

I'm not a brewmaster but I make more money being miserable at my job so that I can afford to drink beer and forget about my day job.

My passion is conducting interdepartmental audits of budgetary resources for ISO 9000 compliance. Unfortunately, at this point, I am just a lowly wardrobe consultant for the Victoria's Secret catalog, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and Playboy. But some day!

Passions: Cooking, reading, music, movies, neffing

No, I'm not doing any of them as a paying job. 🙁

Graphic Design / Photography is my passion. I'm going to school for GD right now, so takes care of one passion. I plan on trying to acquire more photo equipment once I get a job out of school and then I can do photography on the side.

My belief is that you should do what makes you happy. Don't pick something based on money.

That's my belief as well, but in reality it is not always that easy to accomplish.

I always enjoyed programming in my younger days, and now that's what I do.
Of course, I don't do it on my time off these days 😛

My passion would probably be camping. With that said, Im not doing anything related to it in terms of my career. I was thinking about it the other day, how great it would be to have a career in the "camping realm", but it's not practical at all.

OP knows me decently well - what I'm doing is not EXACTLY what I would consider "perfect", but with this world and this economy, it's close enough that I'm very happy with what I do. I've led a pretty good life these last few years so I certainly can't complain - other than the money. I can always use more money 😉

I think people in this country try to define themselves way too much in terms of what they do. Sure, it's great to work a job that you love and that satisfies every desire you could possibly have, but there's also nothing wrong with doing x because it pays well and is at least sometimes fun, but really being into y, or z.

I enjoy programming and I'd like to start doing some amateur racing (SCCA autocross, etc), but I'm worried I'll be terrible (would also help if I owned a car that's more appropriate to race with... although at least I have power) 🙁.

I am a software engineer, but whether I enjoy it or not... that's up in the air 😛. To give you an idea, typically document work bores me to tears. There's so little mental thought.

photography is one of my passions and i managed to get a job working with a photography event full-time. pay is so-so, but enough to get by and have some fun, and compared to my last job in IT recruiting/staffing - the dividends it pays in mental satisfaction is worth some good $$$

it's not perfect, but its better than 95% of most jobs i can think of taht i could obtain.

When you are at work as much as some of us are, I think it is difficult not to be defined by it sometimes.
