I can understand maybe Godfather 3 but 1 and 2 were awesome movies..And Gladiator??
delivers on every level acting, screenplay, direction, and special effects. Lemme guess,
"Harold and Kumar go to white castle" works better for you than go ahead and enjoy
it...

Lord of the Rings. I walked out of two of them in the theater and only kept watching #3 on dvd because I was amazed at how boring and long it was and how it could still be considered such a great movie.

I'd never walked out on a movie before and haven't since. Only the first two LOTR.

you mean you didn't enjoy watching elijah wood look like he's going to sh!t a brick in all the scenes he's in? or the magical land of Middle Earth where, surprise! all the good guys are white?

Office Space. Just kidding, that was a good movie.

Seriously though, Napoleon Dynamite is definitely at the top of my overrated movie list.

Everyone recommended it to me, and frankly, I couldn't see the appeal.

Edit: And the Big Lebowski. I thought it was a decent movie, but nothing life-altering as people seemed to suggest.

Fight Club
Donnie Darko
Napoleon Dynamite
Scarface

All said already in this thread, and I can't think of others. When I saw this thread first thing that came to mind was Fight Club, and lo and behold it was the first post!

Overrated? Fight Club, Pulp Fiction

EDIT: Ok, I think you have to look at movies that have been thought of as "good" at some point. You can't go saying "Blair Witch Project" or "Bobby punches Billy 5" or some random movie and expect that to count. Bad movies are bad, not overrated.

Yes. We need to standardize the definition of a film's "rating" to determine whether or not it's under/overrated.

I like IMDB's ratings - Text

For example, I look at Pulp Fiction rated that high. Then, I look at the movies rated below it and decide that there are many movies rated below it that I feel are better than Pulp Fiction. Ere go, overrated...

FWIW, I understand why Pulp Fiction is good. I just don't have a fun time while watching it.

this is an informative thread, and many of the movies mentioned are so very much overrated.

though, I need to put a good word in for A Clockwork Orange. That is my favorite movie of all time, and i don't care if you say it's overrated 😛

X-Men 1 and 2 we're insanely overrated. Those movies sucked terribly.

Many of the 'cult classics' mentioned really are overrated. Somehow it just became cool to like them 😵

That's kind of why everything Tarantino puts out is overrated... it's because whatever he makes he's got a slew of fanbois that automatically think it's amazing (some of his movies are pretty good and entertaining, but not worth the hype, imo)

I will add Citizen Kane. Maybe it was technically brillant but the acting wasn't very good. The women as per movies in the 30s and 40s were shrill and tended to overact.
This movie is overrated.

What was that recent POS that was all black and white apart from a few colourised bits? I forget the name now but it sucked and everyone was RAVING about it. Arg.

Edit - Sin City, that was it.

Fell asleep during Lost in Translation and I'm a film geek who loves classic movies including 3 hour long ones, yet Lost in Translation felt like it was 40 hours long and I didn't find it cute and didn't find Scarlet Johansen's chunky butt all that appealing (her butt isn't chunky anymore, yay to anorexia)

Fight Club - so gay! And the twist ending was dumb. I liked the first act but found the whole thing too macho, then it sold out on it's point. Bash consumerism for hours - make fun of Ikea and our "fabricated" lives run by mega-corps in favor of anarchy, then say in the last act, that anarchy is not the answer? I think people enjoy the anarchistic punk rock message but don't realize that it's AGAINST those ideologies... Stupid macho men.. Or closeted homosexuals who beat each other because they can't get over wondering what it would be like to have sex with Brad Pitt. Sorry, I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATED that movie..

Looking at the list I'd have to say:

Everything Tarantino
The Matrix
LA Confidential (but only because Basinger won an Oscar)
Saving Private Ryan (quickly went downhill after the landing scene)
Sin City
The Departed
Forest Gump
Some Like it Hot
Braveheart
Once Upon a Time in America (did that movie EVER end?)
Die Hard
Pirates of the Caribbean
Before Sunset (You've got to be f*cking kidding me!)

And, of course, Titanic, in case I missed it on the list.

I'm happy to see Unforgiven is on the list, that's one movie I've watched a few times.
