What's your favorite shareware or freeware CD-ripping tool? Best encoding tool? Opinions on Ogg Vorbis?

looking to make high-quality mp3s to back up some CDs, what is the best CD ripping tool? What about encoding, I'm thinking Ogg Vorbis with CDex, what do you guys think?

As usual any help is appreciated 🙂

I finally decided on EAC + CDex - Ogg Vorbis (ver 1.07 encoder 1.04); VBR - 128kbps min, 196kbps nominall, 256kbps max.

It sounds pretty good IMHO

Ogg is OK but it will be better when it reaches version 1.0...it's currently at RC3.

The best choice is Musepack or MPC. It's a sub-band encoder, so it doesn't suffer from those nasty pre-echo artifacts that make your music sound like it is being played underwater. If you care about quality, MPC is your format. You can get all the binaries here or here.

CDEx to rip, LAME to encode. Although I tend to encode to 64kbps WMA these days for the smaller size and negligible quality difference for carrying around on my Nomad II mp3 player.
