What's your favorite Science Fiction novel? Any aspects of the novel that made you want to read more Science Fiction just like it? Name the title, author, and the aspects you liked about it please.

You should read Dune!
One hellava book. Then perhaps Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy.
No need to explain it till you've read it.

I've read Dune and it is very good. I have a very long and healthy list of novels I've read, being an English major, but I'm a bit weak in the SciFi genre. So help me build a reading list!

Probably either the Battlefield Earth or Dune. I loved Battlefield earth becuase the story just grabbed me. I finihsed the whole like 1100 page book in under 4 days. It was great. But DO NOT see the movie, it sucked ass, and travolita sucks ass. But DO read the book.

the scifi genre is all about sets and series. you have to read a few series' to really delve into the genre. these are some of my favorites.

all of the Dune Series
RAMA series by arthur c clarke
enders game by card
red mars ,green mars, & blue mars by kim stanley robinson
you can read robots by asimov ( ithought it alittle dul but a lot of people like them)

some single books:
any philip dick , ive only read ubik but supposedly hes the grandaddy of SF (according to some)
and last of all Neuromancer by gibson.

if you read all of these you can consider yourself a moderetaly read sf fan. (you will become a fan after reading these)

Another vote for Ender's Game...incredible book! I also enjoy some of the alternate history novels by Harry Turtledove (especially his WWI series).

EDIT: My all-time favorite scifi novel: "The Mote in Gods Eye" by Larry Nivan

Tau Zero, by Poul Anderson. How many novels are out there that concern the end of the universe???

Shotgun:Armor rules!!!

If you like Armor, you would love Starship Troopers. Yes, the movie sucked ass, but it is NOTHING like the book.
"Bugs! Bugs Everywhere!!"

I read StarShip Troopers before I saw the movie, thank Gawd! 😉 As for books concerning the end of the Universe, read The World At The End Of Time by Frederick Pohl, a very good book.

Dune - Frank Herbert; cool story and great writing
Hitchhiker's Guide - Douglas Adams (R.I.P); hella funny
Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien; amazing storyline and beautiful writing

this is a good thread. i will have to check Ringworld and Dune.

My favorite scifi novelists/series:

+ another vote for Clarke and Lee's Rama Series. it's not bad but a little preachy sometimes.
+ I liked some of Asimov's Robot stuff - it's fun and well paced, but i find it gets repetitive
+ my FAVORITE Sci-fi Author of all time James H. Schmitz!

woohoo! Ender's Game!

also...
Dragonlance Chronicles (trilogy) by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman ... (maybe its more of a fantasy book than sci fi...)

there's this whole series of umm... midshipman's hope etc... by somebody i can't remember.. pretty good book, deals with this one guy and his whole scenario with space travel/war/politics etc...

read Ender's Shadow also... great book

man... maybe i should start reading again... stupid college homeworks... no more time...

Well, there are too many to list, but I must put in a plug for the first sci fi book I ever read:

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

It had a very big impact on me and remains one of my favorite books of all time.

Definately Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. One of my all time favorites. The whole series is excellent, but I must say I like the first book the best.

Anything by Robert A. Heinlein, but Stranger In A Strange Land and The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress are among his best works.

Anything by Isaac Asimov, especially any of his robot stories and the Foundation series.

Anything by Anne McCaffery, primarily the Pern books, and the Pegasus/Rowan series.

Lady Niniane

I LOVE the Pegasus/Rowan series! I still need to read The Tower And The Hive but I did finally get to read Pegasus In Space. A great book that was long overdue! 😀

<< Lady Niniane: How about "The Number of the Beast?" Very cool Heinlein novel. >>

Agreed, but I would class that one under speculative fiction rather than pure sci-fi. I am working on my second copy of it, though. 😀 Anything I like, I tend to overuse - we are on our 4th (or is it 5th) copy of Mistress around here because both my husband and I enjoy that one.

Tower and the Hive is a bit harder to get into than the others were (possibly because it attempts to tie up so many loose threads in the series), but it is very good, nonetheless. I really enjoyed Pegasus in Space - by far the best of the Earth-based set of books in the series.
