What's your favorite scifi book (novel or series)?

I usually tend to read fantasy so I've been wanting to get back into scifi. Anyway I started reading the Gap series by Stephen Donaldson last week and I'm really impressed. So far I'm on the third book of the series and it just keeps getting better and better.

If anyone here is a fan of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, I would highly recommend the Gap series as there are some similar themes. There are a lot of twists and subtle developments that build into really interesting reading.

So what's your favorite scifi book?

Favorite series that come to mind:
Ender's Game (4 novels?)
The Memory of Earth (3 novels)
Ringworld
Rama

Edit: And how could I have forgotten: BOLO, originally by Keith Laumer. Awesome sci-fi/war series!

I've been looking for some good hard sci-fi books to read but haven't had much success. I think hard sci-fi has become a lost art.

Asimov's Foundation and Robot series.

Add my vote for these. I still remind computer programmers and process control engineers of the Three Rules of Robotics - good guides for how machines can interact with people.

It's difficult to recommend anything without knowing what you've already read, but Stephen Baxter's entire Xeelee sequence is fantastic. In fact, if you haven't already read Baxter, just look up everything and start reading all his books in the order they were published. Some of the later stuff is not as good, but all of the early stuff is great.

Posleen series by John Ringo

A Hymn Before Battle
Gust Front
When the Devil Dances
Hell's Faire
The Hero
Cally's War
Sister Time
Watch on the Rhine

Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and the three books that followed each lead... I think 7 total

Dune and following though the latter of Frank's books got really weird. His son's (Butlerian Jihad) was good but I haven't read his other ones.

Asimov was great though I read them all back in 8th grade or so and don't really remember them well now. Time for a re-read!

The Space Odyssey books were good but again, I haven't read them for a while now.

A Wrinkle in Time and following were fun books, too. 🙂

Sad but true. Even Terry Pratchett has gone to seed

Ender's Shadow was the best for the first book, then good the rest of the series.
Ender's Game is the best rounded series.

"Time enough for Love" by Robert Heinlein is simply amazing.
I also really liked Ender's Shadow series even if it's not really sci-fi, it is set in the future. kinda.

I heard his books went down hill after the first few. i could be wrong. I love A Hymn Before Battle and couldn't wait for the second book. By the time I am done with the 3rd book, I am pretty depress about the whole series. I did brought some of the later books but never start reading them.

Do not miss the "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series by Steven Erikson. 8th book just got release from uk. I am going to wait until it releases in the US before getting it since I currently reading something else.

David Weber wrote some good sci-fi series.

How many books are planned in that series? I've been holding off on getting started so I don't have to wait forever while the series is completed.
