I just got Age of EmpiresII and the expansion.

This is my first experience with this type of game.
I used to play Half-life, QuakeII, Unreal, etc, then tried HeroesIII and was hooked on that for the last year.

I'm wondering what others out there are better than Age of Empires in that genre.

Age of Empires II is probably my current favorite. But, all time favorite has to go to Warcraft II :)

starcraft's pretty cool, as are baulder's gate, diablo, and some others.

Age of EmpiresII is the current king. It has been since the original Age of Empires.

Empire Earth, that is coming out soon, looks pretty cool.

depending on who you talk t, I like Sacrifice. a lot. there is great debate on whether or not it is a 'true' RTS, but I think you may appreciate the style because you are a FPS fan. there's a demo out. give it a shot, it is great. :)

I decided I like the Huns w/all 3 types of cavalry units.

I used to choose the Chinese with the fast shooting (Sho-ku-nu?), or whatever they're called that you get from the castles.

Sacrifice looks appealing, as does Empire Earth.

I am disappointed that the games aren't as long as HeroesIII, though. I used to play for 8 or 10 hours straight with those.

The really nice thing about the huns is that they don't require houses.

My personal favorite civ is the Koreans. A wall of war carts and siege onagers w/ 12 range is a sight to behold!

Yeah, these new RTS's aren't really meant for single player.... They are much more fun on a LAN or online.

Age of Empires 2 is great. Another similar game is Cossacks, and in that one, you can create armies of several thousand units. Some friends and I had a blast playing the demo on a LAN recently.

Total Annihilation i suppose... C&C was fun for it's time, as was red alert, tiberian sun sucked, and though ra2 does not suck, it was not a whoop either...

I like the Warcraft series and Starcraft. IMO Ages of Empires is slightly different. While WC and SC are a bit more fast paced (especially in multiplayer), AOE is more or an "empire building game". By that I mean you spend more time building and creating your town. I liked the C&C series too, but I thought that Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 had weapons which are too powerful. It is so easy to wreak mass destruction. AOE 2 is a very good game. The guys at Microsoft really spent a lot of time and effort to make a detailed and realistic game.

thelanx- I guess you've been playing against different opponents than I have in AOE. If you stop to worry about building an empire, you're toast.

Well, I haven't really played AOE online much, I just thought the setup was more suited to empire building than Starcraft.
